  2. Do /.'s consider WPA "good enough"? on Government Use of WiFi Not Secure · · Score: 2, Insightful

How secure is secure enough? From what I can see in almost every office I've been in, finding a way to steal data (not necessarily digital format) is relatively easy. So should we really expect "perfect" security from WiFi networks?

Clearly unencrypted wireless is out, WEP too. But how about WPA? I personally feel that running VPN over WiFi would be best, but for many small businesses, the added complexity is hard to justify.

Let me put this another way, what do /.'s use at home?

Generally, formatting and graphics help communication. Fonts, graphics, layout, whatever. Ever try to read a man-page and wish that there was some sensible formatting and highlighting? Would Slashdot be useable if it was pure text only? How about the formatting of your newspaper or textbook?

Several years ago there were legitimate worries about client support for HTML email. There were also worries about viruses. For me at least, those days are long gone.

The biggest problem is people abusing HTML email w/a multitude of fonts/graphics/etc - but that's a people problem, not a technology one.

In Canada, and probably the US, stores, cabs, offices, etc. are allowed to play broadcast radio stations in their facilities for free (i.e. w/o paying RRIA). But if a store pops a few CDs into a changer, then it has to pay for the privelege of using copywrited music to help sell stuff. In theory it makes sense; however, I question the ability of CRIA (Canada) or RRIA to properly distribute the license fees to match the artists whose music is actually played.

  8. "Free" food floods their marketplace... on loband - Killer App for Developing World? · · Score: 4, Insightful

More than making them dependent on "free" food, one of the biggest problems with sending food (or money that is earmarked specifically for food*) is that it distorts the market prices in those areas. In other words, the local farmers can not compete with "free" and they are forced to shut their farms and move on to other ways to make a living. Given the relatively underdeveloped economies, this is a real problem because there aren't that many other ways to earn a living. Over the long term, this hurts their economies greatly.

Note that disasters are a different situation entirely.

    * it's a common practice in Canada, and probably most other developed countries, for national (government) level donations of cash to come with stipulations that the donation must be used to buy Canadian (or [insert donating country name here]) goods. It makes everyone feel good about helping other countries without "costing" quite as much.

  15. I agree... first mover advantage. on Novell's Race Against Time · · Score: 2, Insightful

It's nice to have been the first Network OS for PC's. The first guys to implement networks were invariably the biggest companies since they had the most to gain and the most resources to invest in a computer network. By default, they installed Netware. Fast forward 15-20 years and the bulk of these guys are still on Novell for authentication/directory services and probably file and print. Plus, since NDS works with anything, on many different platforms, there has been little reason for big co's to drop Novell - authentication to MS servers has been seemless for a long time.

Further, Novell is currently profitable and has a fat bank account. I think they'll have enough cash flow to finish any transition to Linux. With their brand name and history, they'll easily make SUSE the #2 Linux distro around (with a real shot at #1).

IMHO, what Novell could really use right now is a some really good integration of WINE into SUSE so that their new Server + Workstation bundles actually have a chance of being useful to the average company that has the odd Windows app that they need to run the business.

So, it makes sense that if you are spending a lot of money on fees and other costs, you have the incentive to upgrade vehicles more frequently because the capital cost of a new car doesn't look nearly as large when all the other costs of owning a vehicle are taken into consideration.
