That's not a bad idea. People are keen to the idea of an app store because Apple did it well. Really, really well.

Someone should make a pretty, easy, dynamic version of the installer that works kinda like itunes and the app store! You could include a "cranky" switch that lets everyone else just use the regular repo search/install.

User threads on the apps themselves, user star ratings, etc. Honestly, half the time I don't know WHICH pdf reader people are using. I want the popular one that gets all the attention and features.

That could be a really cool thing.

I particularly liked the part about how, unless Microsoft permanently reduces the cost of all their software to zero it's an attack on Icelands sovereignty.

That made me giggle a little. And then depressed that the guy who wrote it believes it.

"Unless, and this is important: Microsoft can redeem themselves towards the Icelandic economy if and only if they immediately reduce the price of all of their products to zero, permanently. Anything less will be an act of non-compliance towards the needs of the Icelandic economy, and can be considered an attack on the nationâ(TM)s sovereignty. Such an attack will inevitably be responded to by the market by way of an across-the-board adoption of free software."

I wouldn't have thought this was true until I realized it happened for me. I started using PlayOn to watch Hulu content on the XBox and big ol' plasma tv.

After a couple weeks I realized I hadn't had a compelling reason to download anything from my usual sources. In the meantime they got to advertise to me just like on TV. Fewer commercials so I mind them less.

I wish they'd all stop pissing and moaning and just recognize that this model is a GREAT transitional one between TV and wherever we're headed.

Charge more for the ad space if you have to. Maybe charge a couple $'s a month for aggregators like Hulu. Whatever has to happen, but figure it out because the world is heading this way anyway. It's just a question of whether you want to fight it or make a couple bucks at it... like NetFlix. ;)

The other major factor that should be considered, is that companies like Google, Salesforce, Intuit, and many of the other companies out there have lots of money and human resources dedicated to keeping your stuff safe.

Hosting internally typically relies on fewer people with smaller skillsets and a smaller budget. Your security is often (in some way) a result of obscurity.

I get the impression you thought I was grousing about people using SAAS. In fact we use SAAS for some applications at work, as a direct result of my recommendation. Salesforce.com, et at.

I was simply pointing out that there ARE questions to consider when it comes to internally hosted vs. SAAS apps, and there's nothing silly about asking them. Sensitivity of your information and relative exposure are certainly a couple of the questions everyone should answer before choosing.

As someone mentioned earlier, this is a horrible idea. Colbert is a guy with decent ratings on a tv show right now. What happens if he goes persona non grata?

You justify it as a great PR concept because you probably like Colbert. It's ok, I laughed at the first three episodes too. But if it was someone from American Idol you'd think it was awful... and let's face it, that would probably get a lot more people involved.

It's not an attack against a show you like, it's just a bad idea and I wish people would think about things like that a little more seriously.
