Well, perhaps he would be frowing to see how true his predictions were.
I'm not passing judgment on these screens, but this sure is getting closer and closer to the video wall from "1984"
I definetly think the technology is cool, no doubt about that (a 50" game of Quake 3 anyone?) but it's mere existance seems to lend itself to paralleling "1984"
I've only made it about 1/4 of the way through the comments posted about the latest of the Microsoft vs. Linux battles and I already have seen the trend.
Stop preaching to the choir!
People need to get out to the "masses," the joe-schmo who will be reading the paper or watching CNN tomorrow or in a week and hearing what Microsoft has to say without hearing the other side. The community of/.'ers _are_ part of the other side. Don't sit here and post about how Microsoft is all lie's lie's lie's...explain to NT and Windows users where MS is wrong and _why_!!
I guess in a sense I am saying: Advocate.
Do it in a logical, rational fashion and people will see the light.
I'd hardely say this is new news. AOL has been touting their up-coming AOL-Anyware for some time now (at least since the beginning of 1999). It will allow access to AOL from almost any means, Cable, T1, OC-192, etc. etc.
We have these gateway machines here at work. They are TFT display PC's basicly. Floppy drive, CDROM, AMD K6, speakers etc. all built into the flatscreen monitor. Kinda cool, just not very fast (at least ours are not). It's called the Gateway Profile PC. Right now they are only in our training rooms. Good space saver, but that's about it IMHO:)
My high school instituded the wearing of ID's via a easly detachable neclace (so people wouldn't get choaked) starting in the 1994/1995 school year (right after I graduated and went to college). They also banned all hats, leather coats, and bookbags and purses. The bookbags and purses had to be clear/transparent bags. We had cops there every day and they've had metal detectors since 1994 also. I guess to some it's a wild idea, but to me it's pretty much the norm.
After poking around h2g2.com for a bit, I came across a great interview with Dougals Adams here at ZineZone.com. It is complete with images, audio clips from the interview and more. I would highly recommend stopping by there to take a look. Insite and more into the life of DNA.
Yes. I'm not a fan of IE, but that's what I'm forced to use at work.:( I too get a JavaScript error when pulling up their site. I would have hoped they would build cross-platform compatibility into their site _before_ going public...
Wow, that is one fast machine. All for just weather! Sure, it's not the fastest machine out there, but 4 TFlops for finding out if it's going to rain on Saturday? heh. just joking. The mathematical models used in weather forcasting, and understanding the complexities of even a single supercell (which produces thunderstorms and tornadic activity) is mind-boggling.
are not conspiracy theories what/. is famous for?:)
or maybe that's what _they_ want you to believe?
Even if prices where at $260 a year ago, was that price inflated also? If this is a trend where manufacts raise the price pre-christmas season wouldn't the price of $260 a year ago be a reflection of this also? I'd be curious to see what DIMM prices where in say May or April of 1998.
I'm curious, is this in a machine that is overclocked at all? And which OS are you using? In my past experience, cheap ram in overclocked machines is not a good combo.
Belushi was in Animal House, not Animal Farm. Animal Farm is by George Orwell and is brilliant. Animal House is base humor (but hey, I still laugh until I cry when I watch the movie.)
I think you should be glad you didn't. For $53 either the person selling doesn't know how to price things properly or it was really really cheap (not inexpensive) RAM. I wouldn't trust $53, 128 MB DIMMS.
Actually, I just checked mwave.com and their Corsair memory prices have sky rocketed. a PC100 CAS2 DIMM (128 MB) is now over $260 (US) !!! What the heck? Has anyone else seen this sort of jump in the past couple of days?
Originally I had heard (from customer service reps at www.mwave.com ) that rummors about a shortage of memory had artificially inflated memory prices. Whether or not this "shortage" ever materialized is beyond me. All I know is that I am kicking myself for not ordering that 128 MB PC100 Corsair DIMM when it was $115 (US). Now it's over $170 (US).
around 7K US. Sign me up for two! oh, if I only had the money. That looks quite impressive. I don't know who could buy one? Companies with a lot of money throw around maybe...something to look good in the lobby or corporate board room. Still, that would be nice
Your argument is defunct. People that steal cars would have never bought one to begin with, because they can steal them. People that pirate software don't buy the software because they know they can pirate it.
Well I think I will blame it on monday-syndrom.
Thanks for the correction.

Scary? Yes. The future? Unfortunatly.
Hey, I don't run the company, I just work there :)
Given that these machines are in the training room there are a couple of reasons why to not get a laptop:
1) Theft. It's much more difficult to walk off with one of these things.
2) Durability. With no opening or closing of machines/screens, all the interaction the user has is with the keyboard.
3) Clarity. These are far and away much much better displays than your average laptop.

It really is not new.

An even further update. This was posted at Anandtech today:

Read the middle paragraph.

these new moderation rules are not very nice. this post gets a 0?
oh, and I was speaking of the G3 bundle. whoops. i guess I should have included that in my first comment. :(
An (possible) overestimation of taxes and shipping.

Just wanted to point out that 45K/sec is much better than 0K/s
oh wait...wrong place to respond. I wanted alt.sex.hardcore.linux.xxx
feelin' kinda wacky tonight
whoever did the transparency on the image messed up i think.
