As problematic as FC2 is it's the only distro that let me setup a Xeon SMP machine w/> 4Gb RAM, HW SCSI RAID and LVM/ReiserFS the way I wanted. I still wrestle with multimedia & USB problems and periodically have to give the wlan drivers a whack but I don't seem to have any other choice.
Several thoughts (semi-serious) that have bubbled to the surface regarding recent talks of Moz vs. IE & the slapstick comedy routine being performed in Redmond on the matter of o/s & browser security:
1. Who remembers when the industry was on the verge of adding scripting to browsers? Do you remember how loudly people screamed that this was a bad idea and would lead to security issues we couldn't even begin to imagine? So much for sandboxes.
2. I love the Intel banner add at the top of my/. screen. Apparently, security begins with using real Pentiums microprocessers. So that's the answer!
3. I'd like to suggest a new/. category Icon; "Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots" to indicate browser war articles.
4. Maybe MS should introduce a new product line; we already have XP Home Edition and XP Pro... IMHO- the timing is perfect for an additional variety- the SECURE version.
: )
I've had a PS since when they came out and a PS2 since it came out and neither has failed. I also don't know of anybody that had a failed PS*. Your assumption is incorrect.
Honda says the 2003 Element EX should get 21/24 MPG (city/hw). I've always gotten 1-2 MPH less than spec'd. Its a 5-Speed, 4WD. I'm pretty sure that the weight of the driver they used in their calculations/tests wasn't mine though. : )
If CERT/Homeland Security publicly recommend people switch that's going to definitely have some influence. They came pretty close to doing just that with recent IIS/IE vulnerabilities. The Washington Post picked it up Saturday.
I received my xServer G5 w/OS X yesterday. I work at a small publishing company that has a fishbowl full of about 10 servers 3-4 yr old servers running a mix of BSD, RedHat and MS Windows Server. All but 1-2 of these servers will be replaced by the xServer, simplifying server maintenance/admin tasks. The only reason that 1-2 will remain behind is because of a few apps that will require MS SQL. The xServer came with all the pieces that we were using under various *ix OS's; Apache, mySQL, PHP, Cyrus IMAP, Samba, LDAP, etc. I'm very bullish at how this will simplify things and reduce the number of hours spent administrating the server infrastructure. Not to mention the reduced load on our HVAC plant.
I recently received an unsolicited call from a creditcard company despite 1. being on the national DNC list, 2. having Radio Shack's telezapper, 3. paying Verizon for the extra funcationality of blocking certain type of calls.
Turns out there's an effective, common loophole these bastards use: They partner with a business that you have a legitimate relationship with.
Sequence of events: Phone rings, Caller ID says its AAA (I'm a member), I pick it up and I get the credit card schpiel. When I confronted the agent about being on the DNC list, he said that this call was a special offer to AAA members.
I cancelled my AAA membership.
MS getting into A/V software? Isn't this some sort of paradox or conflict of interest? I thought the MS business model was based on distributing exploitable, insecure software?
It's really too bad that you can't use a REGEX on the reported server s/w to determine which site is trusted or not.
Ideally I'd like to be able to set different security parameters based on the server httpd s/w.
What a quaint little world you live in. Meanwhile, year after year of Moores Law gives us better and better h/w yet Windows never seems to get faster. All we ever do is word processing, browsing the web and emailing, yet winbloat has gotten us to the point that we need a terraflop on our desktops to do it. Don't you think that's odd?
I'd also suggest you run a spyware detection utility on your PC- I'll bet you're surpised.
the ATM's typically found in grocery stores where you can here the damn modem...

I ran PHP, mySQL, Apache on my Zaurus 5500 and it worked ok. Not fast, mind you, but it worked. And the SQL database was on a 1 gb CF flash card. I had a sophisticated production LAMP website that I could rehost to a handheld PDA- novel if nothing else.
I just wish one of these PDA's would get some serious RAM- it's always the bottle neck. The most you ever see is 64M, what's holding them back from throwing a 1G stick inside?!
in other news: Orion sits down w/ID Software for preliminary planning of reference platform for Doom 4
not quite true: The US Army bought 1,500 xServes recently for a G5 based supercomputer.

Awww, come on, put your name on that posting yah chicken. You'll make it easier for them to come get you.
Thanks you for the clarification. They conned me into thinking it was legal. I'll file a complaint.
yes

You think they want to coincide the release of XB2 with the release of Doom 3? It would behove them to ride on such coattails.
Their plan is to give one away with every two books ordered; offer code OPC79.
Cards with a MC/Visa logo only protect you if they're actually a credit card. If they're an ATM you're SOL.
yeah, fingers shifted- not worth correcting

I'd love to see a PC case held shut by velcro, ala the circa 1989 Apple ]['s.

You're a weirdo. Or you're using HP Pavillion cases.
The next announcement I expect to see is Linux distros achieving a dominant marketshare over that other o/s.
