  1. Re:Sometimes on Search and Seizure at the Supreme Court · · Score: 1

    Total Control

If the situation really is threatening, such as a brother putting on body armor, fine, take total control, but this situation is far from a dynamic SWAT entry. If the officer had told him that he was investigating a report of Domestic Violence, then perhaps Mr. Hiibel should have given him his ID, but the police could have done things much more effectively than they did here.

Also, while in your original post you say that the laws dont exist in order to hassle your average citizen, I have seen police do just that many times. Specifically, when I was in high school the police in my town were notorious for having nothing to do but hassle teenagers trying to have a party with some friends, regardless of whether or not there was any underage drinking or drug use. This happened to me twice at my house. Once, I was having some of my friends over on the beach at my house and somehow word got out that there were people there, so MANY MANY kids who I didnt know showed up. I had my mom call the police to have them come over and get the kids who were just hanging around on the side street to leave (we had closed the gate and locked it so that they couldnt come onto our property). Despite the fact that we specifically told them that we just wanted these kids gone, and the fact that there was no evidence of underage drinking (there was none) the police decided it would be best to come around the other side of the house and search EVERY PERSON THERE.

Another time, I was having a party at my house and it was about 2 am. Magically a police officer appeared from the private beach at the back of my house. This time there were many kids drinking, but there is no possible way to see this happening from the nearewst public property (200 yards through trees) and there hadnt been any noise complaints (I asked). When I aked him why he was here the officer just got defensive and said we could do this the easy or hard way, so i said easy, agreed to pour out the beer (after hiding a keg) and he left. There is certainly something to be said for cooperating and defusing the situation (in this case I knew why the cop was there), but the fact remains that police cant just go where they want, whenthey want. No that Im 21 I TRY to get the police to come to my parties, just so that I can tell them to leave. Guess im a little bitter and my sig says it all.

  6. Perfect Price Discrimination on Texas High School Gets iBooks · · Score: 3, Interesting

Perfect Price Discrimination explains why we pay so much for textbooks here in the US, while in poorer nations, the prices are so much lower. We are willing and able to pay the higher prices, while people in say, Ghana, can't. Schools could save tons of money by simply ordering textbooks from international distributers over the internet and having them shipped in to them. I have a friend who makes tens of thousands of dollars a year at his university by doing this fro kids there, which also saves them money.

  7. Not "The American Government" on Texas High School Gets iBooks · · Score: 1

Education spending is done mostly by state and local governments (this is why you get nicer schools with larger budgets in wealthier towns). So this 2.2 million is most likely coming from local property taxes (or corporate taxes if there are any major companies headquarted in this town).

That text comes from section 3 of this article. So it would seem that the answer to your question was determined quite some time ago.

All political/philisophical implications aside, I think that both of those books tell amazingly grand stories and that it is impossible not to enjoy reading about the accomplishments of her protagonists.

However, you are correct that these books are, at heart, philisophical diatribes and really need to be treated as such. While Objectivism and Communism are polar oposites of each other, the similarities i see are quite strong. In theory, both seem to be quite ideal, yet you know that some deeper part of human nature will drive some people to ruin the whole system. It's sad how our nature is so imperfect that every thing must be a poor compromise.

I couldn't agree with you more. I'm really excited for the new story Arc. But if we're on the subject of Comics then I have to mention Kurt Busiek's Astro City. It is a "superhero" comic, but it is really more about the common man. Exceptionally well written and exquisetly drawn. It is one of the reasons that I am unashamed to read comics as a grown man.

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay by Michael Chabon. It's an incredibly well written (pulitzer prize winning) novel set in the golden age of comics, right after WW2. It is about 600 pages and i finished it in 3 nights, I couldnt put it down.

  14. Easier Solution on The Case for Rebuilding The Internet From Scratch · · Score: 1

If your primary concern for updating the internet is to prevent spam, or to at least limit it, ive found a fairly good solution. I just keep two seperate addresses. One i use for the bulk of my important personal and business communications and the other is merely a decoy. Any service that requires me to give an address on a form I automatically assume will also lead to an inordinate amount of spam, so I give only my decoy address. This has been very effective for me, because at least 95% of my spam goes to that address and most of that is easily filtered out. The one thing I would love to be able to do is to sort the mail as it comes in so that mail from certain address I know to be important can beput into a seperate folder or something so that I am sure not to miss it (for my decoy account).
