"Linux wasn't started as any kind of rebellion against the 'evil Microsoft empire,'" Torvalds told The New York Times last year. "I'm not out to destroy Microsoft. That will just be a completely unintentional side effect."

"In a school, it's public money. How should it be spent? Is it ethical to buy software instead of hiring an art teacher? Me, I want an art teacher--not the Microsoft help assistant dancing on every student's desktop.

"Why spend billions," said one Amazon tech guru at the time, "when you can spend millions?"

So funny. I'd post more quotes but I'm too lazy too read the rest of the article. :)

He was not much taller than Dustin Hoffman, who gave him the award.

I'm very grateful to Jackson. Hats off to you, sir, you almost made es forget the desaster the Matrix was.

Seems like all they want to do is spend some money on research. Yeah, I know, market research is important, especially in the corporate world. But with such big names behind OSDL, I'd rather see them actively contributing more (time, code and money) to projects like KDE and GNOME, and even X and forks of X.

Also, I'm a little disappointed they're only focused on the enterprise world.

More dramatic changes, as you put it, could also mean more dramatic results. In many cases, when changes (like cross-breeding types of corn) occur over a long period of time, nature has a better chance to adapt and "catch" errors before they get too drastic.

If an experiment that involves genetic engineering goes wrong, it will go wrong fast, and nobody can foresee the effects of that because there is absolutely no prior incident it could be compared to. That kind of scares me.

  14. Questions... on State Of The Filesystem · · Score: 2, Interesting

I do not know much about file systems, so I have a few questions.

Once we see the GConf example, other possibilities immediately spring to mind. In almost all multimedia formats--such as MP3, MPEG, and OGG--there is a tagging system for storing things such as the author and title. Instead of storing those attributes in the tag--yet another namespace--store it in the file-as-adirectory. I have a file / music/Millencolin/PennybridgePioneers/RightAboutNo w.ogg. I let RightAboutNow.ogg/title be "Right About Now", /artist be "Millencolin". I could add a file RightAboutNow.ogg/genre and put "punk" in it.

While this is a nice example, I wonder if there really is an advantage to this kind of file system, because it seems like it takes more effort to keep track of all those sub-files instead of keeping all the info in a single file. Anyone can shed some light on this?
Also, what if I format my partitions with different file systems, say Reiserfs 4 and ext3, could there be any imcompatibility issues? Imagine I kept mp3's on both partitions, would my mp3 player know how to handle both formats, since the tag info is dealt with differently on both systems?

Check out the G.O.B.I.E Project. It's a graphical installer for OpenBSD.

    From the web site:
The main goal of the GOBIE is to add a graphical installation of the famous OS OpenBSD. This project has bee developped in the spirit of OpenBSD which means that the installation is as close as possible as the text one.

GOBIE wishes to add some value to the product by developping installation modules to known servers such as Bind, Sendmail, Inn, Apache...

Here are some screenshots - looks pretty cool to me. The only downside to it is that the release is scheduled for July and thus not availabe yet, so keep your eyes open. It seems like a project that is worth supporting.

I don't really mind there not being a real GUI-based installer. Although I would appreciate the comfort in having one, I've found OpenBSD installs extremely painless and easy, the installation on my (slightly dated) router box takes no more than 15 minutes. Even as a beginner, a quick read-through of the really excellent FAQ provides all the information you need to get started in no time.

But then, there's this article I stumbled across on Deadly:

G.O.B.I.E, a "Graphical OpenBSD Installer Engine", and I have to say the screenshots look pretty damn slick. They are also working on other cool things. From the web site:

[G.O.B.I.E] wishes to add some value to the product by developing installation modules to known servers such as Bind, Sendmail, Inn Apache..

Among them, you will find help to configure PF(Packet Filter), authpf, altq and some other tools.

We have planed to build a kernel configuration tool too !!!

I think that sounds like an interesting project and (though IMHO not absolutely needed) I would like to see it being officially presented as an alternative to the current installer.
