  1. Alternative Sources of Power Generation on Building an Energy Efficient Datacenter? · · Score: 1

Have you thought about installing wind turbines on the roof of your building to generate electricity which you can then feed back into the grid?

You will probably never be able to generate enough power to completely power your data center, but even if you generate 1%, 5%, 10% ... that's savings on your electric bill. Your ROI could be substantial over time.

Buildings in Chicago are strongly thinking about this (for obvious reasons).

Other areas could probably benefit too.

However, you failed to recognize the rhetorical nature of my statement.

Note the intentional choice of puntuation. A period as opposed to a question-mark.

"When will people learn," was more akin to me dipping my head in frustration. "When _will_ people learn?"

I am well versed in the concept of security through obscurity, as obviously are you. The problem does not lie--but is precisely beacuse--Governments and Organizations predominantly want to rely on obscurity to provide their main means of protection.

Look at the White House photos on Google Maps as a prime example. As if painting the White House brown (which is apropos these days I suppose), and the EOP and Treasury buildings green.

As if that would stop any would-be terrorist.

Flying into Reagan National? Better not pop out your camera to take some stills 'lest some trigger-finger-happy Air Marshal decides to use your body for target practice.

Want to go to the top of the Washington Monument? Better not take any pictures of the Mall and of Penn. Ave.

The notion that by masking out the rooftops of "sensitive" buildings will protect the Country any better is irrational and unjustified.

Acts such as these are nothing more than a Government sticking its proverbial head in the sand.

The same holds true for India.

I stand by my original reply. Security through obscurity rarely works. All it takes is one person to discover the "obscured" information asset and publicize it, then the obscurity is broken.

Now all I have is basic cable, with an Elgato EyeTV to record some shows that I love to watch later that night before I go to bed with my EyeHome.

But, I'm paying $45 month for basic cable.

That's about 23 episodes I could download before it's costing me MORE money than cable.

I watch more than 23 episodes of given shows in a month. But, I don't think I watch much more than 45. And, if all of my shows were on (including some from HBO and Showtime) then I know I'd definitely get ALL my shows via iTunes (if it were $0.99 with commercials or $1.99 without like for HBO shows) because THEN it would be cost effective for me.

Hell, I'd buy a Mac Mini just for the bedroom with a sailing clicker remote just so I COULD watch the shows.

Comcast Cable has got to be one of the WORST cable companies in my area (NW Atlanta). Cable Modem goes out more often than not, and the Sci-Fi Channel is fuzzy and has ghost images on the screen.
