Yes, I could run NetBSD and upgrade to it and not pay anything. If I do, then I won't be able to run iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, Safari, Photoshop, Dreamweaver, Turbo Tax, Quicken, Quickbooks, EyeHome, EyeTV, Poser, Carrara Pro, Vue Esprit, Keynote, Pages, and a myriad of other applications that I use if not on a daily basis then at least weekly.
Can somebody intelligent explain to me why mac users take it personally offensive if someone like Linux more than OS X.

Another question. Why do mac users equal all *nixes? OS X may be a *nix but not my way of doing things so why must I run it? Is it that mac users don't know anything about unix and just use it as a sales-argument for us that do?

In all seriousness, there is not//one// Linux-created piece of software (that I wanted to run) which I couldn't compile for myself under Mac OS X. With or without Fink.
I remember a VOD/ Movie On Demand service stating that it wouldn't work with Mac OS X because of the lack of DRM available on the Mac.
Yet, for as long as I can remember, every Mac has an embedded Serial # readable through software and the OS without any bitching by the Mac community (to which I am a part of).
Sure it can be averted, but as long as "About This Mac..." can read the serial # then it's there somewhere.
But the main difference between the Mac and a Dell is what makes a Dual Apple PPC 970 machine a "Mac"..... is the OS.
Dell machines will always be Dells but what makes a Dell a Dell is the hardware, not Windows. A Mac can truly only be called a Mac if it is running Mac OS [X]. Otherwise, it's simple Apple Hardware.

I use Dreamweaver. Extensively. Over 70 different sites are stored within Dreamweaver.
I also use PHP Includes. Extensively. Over half of my sites are PHP Include -based as far as templates are concerned.
One of the things that Dreamweaver MX 2004 blows everything else out of the water is the ability to *internally* understand PHP Includes, and render the contents in the edit window.
The only time things get dicy is when I need to edit any of the "common/layout-*.inc" files since they're partial HTML so Dreamweaver *does* have a little hard time dealing with those, but most of those edits are maintained in the Code view window anyway so it's not a big deal.
For any serious web developer, Dreamweaver is so much more than its templates, and is almost a must to have in one's toolkit.

Then set your Mac to start up in text-mode only.
Run Darwin's version of X11 and KDE if you want to.
You still have access to GCC and the rest of the development environment (and hardware support) sans X-Code or any other Aqua development tool.
Then again, you wouldn't have access to those under YDL or NetBSD either.
Especially when all of these things ... as well as full hardware support comes with the f*cking computer!.
