According to the grape-wine information channels there will be a massive push regarding BluRay content tomorrow Jun 3 2008.
How massive I have no idea of BUT the content selection so far has been below par and only a select few titles that are currently on BR is of any worth on massive scale which obviously show that was in a holding pattern for an extended time. Same "shitty" content select existed for HD-DVD.
But yes the disk price needs to get down to below $25 a pop too.
The big thing is that consumers that previously were happy buying DVD's for its quality over VHS are not doing so anymore... 1) No money, 2) Want the title in BR, 3) Renting it
Why is it so bad that many companies make a little money each rather than one company (or a consortium) makes a huge amount?
Why must anything that replaces Windows be exactly as Windows?
ISV don't have to support ALL possible solutions out there and both DELL and HP are in the business of selling hardware... they will have to choose which Linux distro sells the best for their typical consumer and hardware.
Who knows maybe if both DELL and HP really put an effort into it they might be able to have a bunch of distros to select from without too much overhead... I mean a simple dd from the right master drive is all what it takes to imprint a certain HD with your favorite Linux dist... this is not rocket science (although Microsoft has definitely made it look like it is.)
So really all of this is giving the consumer more choices and IMHO that is good.
Now you certainly seem to be hoping for a homogenous computer landscape that has everything exactly the same... which would be perfect from a support point of view... but that Sir is premature optimization.
"Rob Y" You can't possibly be Robert Young but just in case... thanks for Red Hat.
Tool chain builds the glibc et.al. The tool chain also builds the kernel. The tool chain is capable of building itself from scratch.... so I fail to see how this is not a place where one can significantly thwart a system. Having different versions of glibc et.al. definitely makes the attack vector smaller.
And no this has little to do with security through obscurity (as some in the replies have raised)... this has to do with resilience against total collapse of a system... how goes the saying about having all ones eggs in one basket?
Because of security... I am happy that not everybody is on the exact same kernel nor tool chain... all this makes everything into a smaller attack vector. More robust IMHO.
so who will ensure that the government or any other party does not tax my brain... I mean will anybody that has higher education (thus potentially more IP between their ears) need to pay extra tax because they might have some insight that other mortals don't have?
I for one really dislike the idea on a fundamental level.
There will undoubtedly be cases that will trigger bad stuff but generalizations are rarely (never) a good thing.
So whats the next step? Any man that is over a certain weight and uses the net more than X amount of hours is now profiled to be something that they are not?
Big brother I request kindly that you go and play hide and seek and go eff yourself.
You would be correct if Xbox 360 nor Wii didn't exist. Prices will certainly drop or the units will be packed with more of other kind of technology (PVR) for the same price.
Music is about sound too, very much so IMHO. Just try to listen to AM radio and compare that to FM radio and the feel is VERY different. If you do not get a different emotional response while listening to the same tune on the two formats then you probably are not listening but REMEMBERING how it should sound... Thus the vast and deep resources thrown at psychoacoustics and why MP3/ATRAC/OGG works in the first place.
You may not agree to this but maybe you should read a layman approach to it:
Taking out how something sounds: it wouldn't matter if it came from old wax 78's or some of todays lossless formats and I can categorically say that sound does matter. For instance Black Sabbath wouldn't sound anywhere near if they had acoustic guitars (thus all that un-plugged stuff for me is a complete waste... conversely when a symphonic orchestra does a rock tune... ultimately the tunes become flat in vastly different sounding musical systems.)
So yes Music is about sounds TOO and you are missing out on a lot if you have taken out that dimension completely.
Not only that but looking http://www.synth.nu/ there are quite many "Synth" groups too (ok the web site contains all the worlds bands and their search doesn't filter based on country.)
And there is a lot more in the "normal musik" category... Jussi Björling, Lil-babs, Lisa Ekdahl and a helping heaping of many more.
So sending a CAD/CAM file or VHDL design or any other file that contains IP does not infringe on any IP... common... its not all about Music, Film and the arts you know.
Maybe you should google "Dennis Pop" and "Max Martin" (Not that I like the music but it should give you an epiphany or two.)
I grew up with ABBA constantly on radio and can't listen to it. Britney et.al. are modern day derivatives more or less.
All the while multi national corporations with many stock holders in North America "own" the "IP" that they didn't even produce that wants to milk the cow is the real tragedy.
Ok ok... according to some java ink blots this morning they too confirmed what the grape-wine phalanx mustered the doused night before.

Where is my barf bag!
"...Crystal Skull is an absolute triumph, and a picture-perfect tribute to one of cinema's great action franchies..."
OMG by bullshit detector just exploded.

Not troll questions... seriously...
Why is Microsoft relevant or have I missed them being marginalized to oblivion?
Didn't Microsoft have a special deal with ASUS the other day regarding Windows?
GM not wanting VISTA? (Don't blame them.)
Why would any frugal investor stay with Microsoft these days?
so botching as many XP installs to make people shift to Vista is in Microsoft's and their shareholders best interest.
I see this as nothing more than business as usual, bate and switch.
This is good news. Very good news. In fact it has made my day!
Yup... it's time to go fishin'
I'll be back in... oh... how about 2032?
Gotta fix all those UNIX date issues... well at least that is my pension plan.
Heh... I plead not being awake at all!
Yup scary indeed...
from the top of my head... as I remember the dialog in that movie with a killer rabbit.
"Thou shall count to three... not to four nor to two... to three."
"Can I count to five?"
"No Sire... to Three"
The holy hand grenade.
I see that he did this so that he will have a way to monitor the blog posters and "censor" the bad stuff about Vista on behalf of Microsoft.
If you can't beat them join them and subvert them like done with the ISO cert on OOXML.
Doesn't surprise me a bit IMHO.

Ya...ya.. RTFM
everybody that peruses porn will become rapists.

Unless of course it goes like in "Spieces II"
accelerated gestation! Woohooo... OMG... hurl.

I will not go and see the 3D concert that is now playing in IMAX theaters.
Have you ever heard the whining from the kids when that tape that they have seen 50 times already is broken and can't be played?
I'll take any disc format over that no matter the cost!

OMG... Alice Babs not Lil-babs. Iiiisch I bow my head in shame.
