TFA is wrong. My dad works for Xerox, and I was talking to him about this article. He designs software for the big docutechs, and he assured me that this is the market they are in and they have far more market share then those numbers would allow. I'm not sure where those numbers came from - [maybe they just forgot to include Xerox?] but this is the area that Xerox makes most of its money in now.

well, first you would dig a pilot hole. Ideally, you would put this along a planned axis [the air inside the spinning asteroid would be thinniest along the axises, so air loss would be minimized later]

The pilot hole goes all the way to the center of the asteroid. If it is determined the asteroid is strong enough, progress continues, otherwise it would become a mining colony.

The asteroid is then hollowed out from the center, with the removed material taken out the pilot hole. While this is being done, small rockets will increase the rotational rate of the asteroid to super-fast speeds. Eventually, the disired diameter and simulated gravity are achieved.

At this point, a massive gate is attached at the mouth of the pilot hole. This gate will become the asteroid's space port once it is inhabited. The pressure is then built up, and if the atmosphere holds, soil is shipped in and buildings are put up, and then the settlers move in.

The major problem you would have with this is the need for a massive amount of artificial lighting in the early-generations of asteroid settlement. Eventually, as the technology is refined, I could see the narrow pilot hole replaced with massive windows that will let in the sunlight.

Um, everyone over the age of 18 is eligible to vote, that is about 210 million people out of 290 million.

120 million actually bothered to vote in the last election, and 61 million voted for Bush. Now from that I can see where you say "a quarter of the population gets to choose".

However, You make it sound like its only one group that gets out to vote, while it is really varing percentages of every group over 18 that votes. The people who don't vote are usually the people in the middle who don't really care who wins. This makes it exceedingly difficult to oppress the majority, since they will feel the need to vote and will turn out en mass in the next election.

Finally, the religious right controls the country right now! You make it sound like they are a tiny oppressed minority. If you are looking for the oppressed in America today, I can tell you where to look, and it isn't the white, right-wing suburbs. Its still the poor, black disatvantaged inner cities that are still stuck in a vicious poverty cycle.

If you want to talk about the oppressed groups among whites its almost certainly the gay community. The atheists always take a hammering in speeches, but its impossible to tell who they are, usually, so they usually get a pass.

Anyway, its true that America is ruled by the people who show up and not neccesairly the majority. But if you think the religious right is the oppressed group in America today, you need to check into the loonie bin. Or get a job on talk radio.

These are verified ballots that were, basically, intially rejected do to incompetance. It was only caught because the Democratic county Chairman's ballot was one of the rejected ones. On closer inspection, they found that 700-odd ballots were completely rejected by mistake. The Republican Secretary of state agrees that these ballots were rejected by accident. And if you are still skeptical, the ballots split 4-3 [Gregoire-Rossi], which is a similar margin to the rest of the ballots from King County.
