The funds are available as a convenience... If the check you deposited doesn't clear, the funds are taken back... I JUST had this happen with BofA with painful consequences, as I had spent the deposit (which ended up as an overdraft on my account because the deposit was taken back).
Only problems I see here are that:
1. Melt water is fresh (and therefore less dense than the seawater is would be displacing)
2. The Artic Ocean (and all the oceans once you go down enough) are already pretty close to that temp (~3C).
Is this a surprise? From the article, it says that the calling party number is always sent, and there's just a flag set saying "don't look here." If you tell someone they can't or shouldn't do something... that's the best way to insure that they will.
The real inefficiency is the conversion of biomass to fossil fuel. 98 tons only makes 1 gallon of gas? If took 98 tons of biomass now and used it to produce methane for fuel, we'd do a hell of a lot better than the equivalent of one gallon of gas.
Our gasoline powered cars may not be efficient, but the fact that 98 tons=1 gallon seems pretty irrelevant.
Cities seem to be hit by few tornados, mainly because cities take up very little space. Tornados are fairly rare and effect small areas. It shouldn't be too surpising that cities are rarely hit..
if you have a 1/10000 of the land is city and 1/10000 of the land gets hit by tornadoes, then you'd have a 1 in 100000000 chance of a tornado hitting a city.
Also, thunderstorms (especially supercell storms) are big (read: HUGE). City structures aren't very big in comparison. Salt Lake City and Nashville have been hit in recent years...
With Chicago, I'd guess it has more to do with the lake than with the buildings.
The color of the cloud (white and fluffy or dark and gloomy) doesn't really depend on the cloud's water content, but where you view it from. If you are in the clear viewing a cloud that is in sunlight it'll be light colored. If you're in the cloud's shadow, it'll look dark.
The bigger puffier clouds actually probably have much more water...
Some of us actually spend time outside.. under that glowing mass of incandescent gas floating in the sky.. for us black shirts are bad news, unless you like sweating profusely doing next to nothing.
Other southern states should look into this... Much of coastal Texas and Louisianna is sinking due to all the ground water being pumped out. Some places have sea water filtering in, replacing the pumped out ground water. If these areas could get their fresh water supply from the ocean, these problems could be abated.
In regards to the Tampa area project, I didn't see anything on their page about the salinity of the waste water from the desalination process. Could this create problems? That salt has to go somewhere. In the grand scheme of things, that amount of salt isn't very much, but in a local ecosystem it might have an effect.
Would it be rude for me to tell you to get a life? This EXACT spiel has been posted before, months ago...
I really shouldn't even be justifying this with a response, but if you're telling the truth, you've got some problems with your Mac. I could supply you with similar anecdotes about my experience with painfully slow PCs, but i won't bore you anymore.
Picking nits here, i know, but rotational inertia is a property of the object (I=(MR^2)/2 i think,) Angular momentum depends on the rotational speed, (L=I*omega) not the moment of inertia itself.
No matter what happens, there are gonna be nay-sayers who are going to deride anything that Jobs announces. There are also gonna be the mac zealots (i'm not quite there.. but pretty close) who'll swoon over anything that Stevie throws out there. Personally, I don't have any money to buy anything new, but I'm still eager to see what is released. I'd love to see the iApps updated, and hopefully remain free (or at least a perk of a.Mac subscription..).
I'm sure this has been going on for a lot longer than I've noticed it, but it seems like there's a pretty big trend toward displaying information from your computer without looking at the monitor, specifically displaying somewhere on the case. Apple's Xserves have those nifty LEDs, we have some Dell servers here that light up orange or green depending on what's going on...
Now you have these text displays (i know they're not new) and that new Apple patent that everyone's buzzing about. While I think its great to be able to get some information about you system at a glance (like the old CPU load LEDs on the old BeBoxes) in a rack environment, but how much of this stuff is just eye candy (not that there's anything wrong with that..)
This technique may work fine for the liver and a few other organs that are less vital (digestive organs for example). The article said the man was without his liver for only 11 minutes.. Surely this is the time that it was completely out of his body, and the time it was "disconnected" was much longer. Other organs, like the lungs and especially the brain, can't be so readily removed.
Apple really tries to control any media exposure to its products with an iron fist.. I'm still kinda wondering if Time Canada (I think that's who leaked the new iMac) every felt Steve's wrath.

I embezzeled millions of dollars from this company, but its out of business now, so what the heck?

just some text so it'll let me post...
I believe you are talking about aerogel. Very nifty stuff.

I heard there is a new SI unit called the emu. (Elephant Mass Unit) There has been some confusion, since emus probably aren't over 50kg.
What specific locale is more easy to remember than where you currently are?

I third this idea!
The battery has changed.
New: 630 mAh
Old was 1200 mAh, i believe. So, it seems that its MORE effiecient.. half the battery and nearly the same play time.
You can expect that in 10.3, but this is just another double point release...

Hmm... Maybe he got his hands on a leaked copy of an iTunes 4 beta from a Hotline server! Wait, no...
