If she is expecting a professional translation she is right. On the other hand there are many reasons why people do use such programs.

I know several local residents who do not speak much Spanish and routinely scan, OCR and translate into English all "Official looking" mail. This will usually identify messages threatening to cut off the power supply, tax demands, this week's special offer from the bank and the Mayor pandering to the masses.

Sure, it would be nice to have a perfect text every time. In the mean time they are very happy to be able to get the gist of the message and not spend so much wasted time with lawyers, agents and translators.

Probably not, most of the manufacturing will be done by other robots, maybe even a lot of the design. What will happen will just be an extension of what has been happening for years.

The lower level jobs have been disappearing for a long time. It is ages since I went into my bank, had an attendant put petrol in my car or seen someone sweeping with a broom in a store. Nobody digs holes any more, buses and trucks have a single driver, no more ticket collectors or driver's mate. I could go on.

To a certain extent new jobs are created such as in call centres and fast food restaurants but nowhere near enough.

The world is dividing into the high powered high paid corporate class with all the money but little leisure time and the underclass with few prospects. It makes me think of Romanov Russia.

Being a pessimist I reckon that the danger is a re-emergence of communism and revolution.

In the end I bought a Compaq laptop via their UK web page but they would not deliver to Spain and only accepted a credit card with a UK registered address.
My guess is that apart from the various reasons discussed in this thread a major factor is local distribution contracts and corporate structures.
