  1. I'd buy a Tivo if I could... on TiVo, PVRs Not Making A Splash · · Score: 1

But I happen to live in Canada and our only options seem to be buying a PVR with a satalite TV service. Tivo cites legal reasons (in their FAQ) for not moving into our market, perhaps they just don't see a large enough benifit to get Tivo past the CRTC?

I don't suppose there's a grey market for Tivo service like there is for U.S. satalite service?

  2. Insurance fraud? on Network Webcurity Wishlist? · · Score: 1

I agree with the ideas put forth here in principle, but having security insurance would mean that (as in any insurance) some companies are going to try insurance fraud and intrude on their own machines and try to claim damages. Without an investigation and guilty party found, how can you be sure it's not an inside job? The insurance companies are likely going to refuse to pay if they arbitrarily decide it's an inside job (they'll surely have some clause) or the insurance rates will be prohibitively high.

A similar sort of scenario would be arson done to collect insurance, but with arson it is generally more traceable and definitely more localized (the arsonist had to be physically present, meaning they're likely still nearby and very likely seen by witnesses), with computer attacks if the attack is forwarded, spoofed, etc. and originated from somewhere in Russia, you'd be hard pressed to find out if the CEO didn't just contact Russian-Insurance-Fraud.ru from home to arrange the attack.

However, if there is some decent check for preventing security insurance fraud, then anything that increases security and accountability of corporations can only be for the better.

  5. ATI for me... on 3Dfx No More -- NVidia Purchases Video Card Maker · · Score: 2

I don't care as much about blistering speed (I'm more than happy with 60fps, why do I need 160?), as much as having a card do what I want, doing it reliably and well enough.

I used to use an ATI Rage Pro (came with the machine, not my choice). For 2d, it did what I wanted well and did it pretty reliably. A refresh rate of 100 was more than enough, and I didn't really consciously think of the video card, as there was nothing wrong, it worked, and so I didn't think about it. For 3d though, well, let's just say I always used software mode rendering.

Since I like playing all the latest games, and software mode was cutting it less and less, I upgraded to a Voodoo 3 2000. I could have gotten a faster, more showier TNT, but it didn't do what I want, and it didn't do it reliably. What did I want? Glide support for all my old games that had Glide or Software mode, nothing else really; decent 3D performance, which the V3 provided and good 2D, refresh rate of 100; many other things more than good enough and for this iteration, good enough Linux support to do various work & game related things. Grabbing the latest version of XFree86 at the time, there it was. At the time, I was hearing that while NVIDIA was faster, 3dfx was more stable. Hearsay or not, I heard it enough from websites, discussion groups, friends, etc., to lean towards 3dfx in this matter too (although glide support was a bit higher up than small issues, graphics bugs can be very annoying).

Time moves on again... This time I have a bit more cash to spend, and I'm also very interested in having TV-in capabilities (for various reasons). Again, I hit the reviews, reading between the "200 fps" hype, and looking for what I want, and what I want done reliably. I hear that ATI's drivers, instead of being almost never stable, are now almost never unstable. Performance wise, they appear to score pretty well compared to the GeForce's I'm looking at (I have more money, not infinately more money). And guess what else Radeon comes in? All-In-Wonder! The best TV-in solution, or so everywhere seems to say (even new and better with the Radeon version supposedly). So I get very decent 2D (ATI's strong point since way back), very decent 3D (new to ATI, but still very good) and also very decent TV-in. I bought my ATI AIW Radeon 32MB DDR, and haven't looked back since.

3dfx + NVIDIA may make a really good card in the future that will make me change my mind, but for now, I'm in the ATI camp. As far as I see in the immediate and near future, ATI's going to be the big competition to NVIDIA. They've got the T&L, got all the whizzbangs, even have some that GeForce's don't (yet, they all end up on the next rev of cards). Not only am I happy with the card, they're also Canadian, like myself. Gotta support those local multinationals. ;)

We can guess fairly accurately at relatively recent things, but we can't even say with full certainty what the C14 level, or any other age determining factor, was 1000 years ago, let alone exponetially higher ages.

The exhibits look very interesting, so I'm wondering if there's any chance of the exhibits coming closer to me, instead of the even more unlikely chance of me coming closer to the exhibits.

I'm sure a well done cryptology exhibit that toured major museums such as the one nearest me, the ROM (Royal Ontario Museum), would probably draw many interested individuals if such a prospect was feasible. I'm not sure how well the exhibits would travel (although many delicate and priceless artifacts travel somehow), if putting together a tour would be too much work, that the NCM has too small of a collection that touring out any part would make it too empty, or any other valid reason against would stop it, but my wishful thinking would like to ask: Will the exhibits ever tour?

    Dear Battle.net Stress Testers,

We wanted to personally notify you that Diablo II has gone gold and the master CDs have been released to manufacturing. We
expect the game to begin shipping to stores worldwide as early as the end of June.

Even though the game has gone gold, the stress test will continue throughout the next couple of weeks. The optimization of
servers is completely independent from the game going gold, so you will continue to see network improvement up until
launch. We also will be sending out access keys to European and Asian gamers shortly, so we can fully test those local
servers prior to the game hitting stores as well.

We encourage you to continue playing over the next few weeks to help us test the servers as much as possible before the
game ships. We will email you prior to the stress test ending.

Thank you for the hours you have committed to playing Diablo II on Battle.net. We hope that you will enjoy the game.

This may just be unclarity, but perhaps they picked one unsigned artist and then monitored just that artists songs. This means they can pick a crappy band, which no one will download except by mistake, and then draw their "one" number for greater emphasis. Not that I'm accusing them of doing just that, but there is probably no "average" unsigned band that they could monitor just like there is no "average" person.

Monitoring just one artist seems a lot more realistic than all unsigned bands. Does anyone know how hard it would be to find out if 1000*n bands are signed or not? I'm assuming it's rather hard, and that finding out if just one band is signed or not is a lot easier.
