I'm not the original poster, but...
I don't think he means that software should be left deliberately bad. You just need to make some software that is outstanding in comparison to your competition. If you do that, you just continue to develop, add features, etc. Eventually you can split off and start making new software. Rinse, wash, make billions, repeat.
There's already one company that has done this, but most people on Slashdot do not understand the law of causality.
You stupid shit, you aren't entitled to a goddamn THING. If you want a fucking LCD get off your ass and work for one. The reason America is so fucked up financially is because of stupid whiney bitches like you who think they deserve to have shiny toys without actually earning them.
Assclown.
I'm doing my part to force 'em out of business. Sure, they are providing competition for MS/Apple, but I find their business practices despicable.
You have a very warped idea of competition. The whole point of competition is to force the inferiors out of the market. Keeping an inferior alternative around just to provide "competition" is ridiculous.
Then they would still lose a large percentage of customers. Would you buy from walmart.com if it had a "shout outz" at the top? Who knows what else the modified?
If MPEG4 is delivering an inferior product at a higher price, then MPEG4 deserves to die.
If WMP9 is an inferior product at a lower price, there will still be a market for MPEG4--much like there's still a market for Photoshop even though you can download the GIMP for free.
Good point. Perhaps with the advent of a truly secure mechanism, companies will be more interested in developing/investing in better compression/transmission technologies, whereas now they might be put off by the rampant piracy.
This will be a good thing for those of us who don't steal our entertainment.
He is quite "terrorized" by the though of people being able to choose their software vendor based on the merits of the product and not by what is forced down there throat.
Do they?
lol micro$oft sucks!
This is Socialistdot, remember.
And you're all fucking loony.
Shut the fuck up, assclown. If you don't like the company's terms, don't buy their shit.
What the fuck are you smoking? 90% of the people on Slashdot are communists. Just ask them what they think the government should do about Microsoft.
Proprietary software does not have to work perfectly in order to succeed. It has to work better than the competition.

If I ever meet God, I'm going to kick his ass.
I think that means you're evolving.
You forgot to mention Microsoft (sorry, Micro$oft) and George W. Bush somehow. Sorry, you fail.
Verifiable records of all those events occurring, along with a legitimate video would be a good start.
No, it's not. Anyone in the U.S. can go to college if they have the grades.

Oh, come off it. People aren't that stupid, although I know it gives you a feeling of superiority to think so.
Google controls nothing which is not their property to begin with. If Google becomes too abusive, people will go elsewhere. End of story.
No, but you can hold them responsible for pushing the wall down.

Once again, how can he make people stop? If you don't want this BIOS or whatever, don't buy it.

Why is it that people cannot do this right now?
they will force consumers to switch
How, exactly, can they do this again?
Notice how everyone "copied" from Apple but Apple "based their ideas on" Xerox.
