As someone who really does know, I don't think you'll see any of our intellectual property on anonymous user machines any time soon.

I agree with you about the startling similarties. If it happened once, it could be written off as coincidence. But twice? Or even three times? One could argue that in general concept, there is a high similarity between Monsters, Inc and Shrek. Sure, the plots are different (as are the Finding Nemo/Sharks Tale, and Bugs Life/Antz plots), but at the highest level they both feature big misunderstood monsters that turn out to be good guys.
Having said all of that, I actually liked Antz better than A Bugs Life and I liked both of the Shrek movies a lot more than Monsters, Inc.. So...
I guess it doesn't bother me too much.
Sure would be cool if all these companies released their products to the public as free tools for educational use. Imagine the independant stuff that could be produced with it. I suppose this is the case with most other industries which is unfortunate... too bad everyone couldn't share their stuff to benefit all.:(
It would also be cool if Ferrari gave away free cars, and everyone had all the food to eat that they wanted... free of charge! And everyone was given a MOON PONY!!!
You use a non-toy language which abstracts out the peculiarities of those databases.
"use DBI;" and all those databases work.
What if you're creating a 'non-toy' database application. Do you really think DBI abstracts the differences in all of these databases, even when using triggers, etc, to the point where you don't have to worry about it? Uh.. No.
Tomb Raider, the game, was heavily influenced by the Indiana Jones movies (even to the point where the original game pays homage by having the ark in the training mission in Lara's house).
Yet they still made two (pretty terrible) Tomb Raider movies...
This is nothing but FUD. The World Wide Web was created by Microsoft. That is why the Internet Explorer is an integrated part of the Windows Operating System. All this Berners-Lee fellow did was make an Open Source clone of Internet Explorer called 'www', and as with other Open Source clones, it has a crappy UI and hardly no features. It is all in text, for christ's sake.
Ok, I just read that whole page Brin wrote and I think I got stupider while reading it.
Just to touch on one point near the end -- the point of Obi Wan stashing Luke on Tatooine; uh sorry David but that makes absolutely perfect sense. Given Vader's history, why not hide something from him in the last place in the galaxy he is likely to go -- the site where he was held a slave and where his mother was killed?
Even villians have emotions.
I suspect that if the Army had shown a merciless Iron Hand in the immediate aftermath of the war -- shoot-on-sight curfews, round-ups, summary trials and executions -- we would have instilled a level of fear-based respect we don't have now, not to mention preservation of infrastructure and law and order.
But that would have sparked a revolution back here in the US. You shithead.
Yeah, why should they know, does it really matter, no.
I fully agree. What does she expect, a little RMS manifesto popup that shows during the software install? Yeah, that will REALLY attract new users to Linux...
I appreciate much of the software RMS, etc have created with the GNU project, but their over-politization of the issue of Free Software certainly isn't helping when it comes to mainstream adoption. The fact remains that the vast, vast majority of computer users don't care if their software is "Free". The fact that it is Free is completely irrelevant if they just want to use it to get a job done.
Trying to force the issue down their throat is just going to reinforce their existing notions about Linux/GNU types being antisocial freaks.
Reminds me of the rumored Microsoft tactic of hiring two people for one job, with the knowledge that one of them would be fired at the end of the first year. The result is that the two would end up working many hours of unpaid overtime that management doesn't even have to ask for in order to get ahead of their rival.
Nice urban legend, but Microsoft (while they may be evil), is smart enough to understand that working a lot of overtime is a bad idea because your productivity nosedives. Many studies have shown that given the same skill-set and work ethic, a happy 40 hour worker will out-produce a burned out 60-80 hour worker quite easily after the first two weeks.
You can search through the results of their ongoing salary surveys based on area of the country. The information you get there will surely be better than single anecdotes from Slashdotters.
All in all, things aren't looking too good for entry level programmers compared to just a few years ago. You're probably a leg up on most of your competition just by having two offers.
While the costs of living may play a role, what type of living is it that American programmers want so badly? I would be satisfied with an apartment and basic living expensives ($1000/mo) so it seems to me that we should offer our services for a much lower price.
Have you ever ventured outside of your mom's basement?
The question, however, is this: is it good enough to correctly identify the song if I hum a few bars?
No. These audio fingerprinting services work by comparing audio samples of the songs (as recorded). They won't work if you hum a few bars into the phone. Hell, they wouldn't work if you played the tune almost perfectly on a piano, for that matter.
Nepal totally sucks. Just like Linux.
This makes baby Jesus CRY AND CRY.
You know what is gayer than Wine? Me neither.
It goes up to 11, see. That's one higher.

Oh, yes, what a wonderful world that would be!

You and the "real Napster" from the remake of The Italian Job should get together and start a support group.

Probably because the post it was responding to (my post) was an obvious troll. YHBT. HAND.

DORK!

No, Microsoft denounced the GPL/LGPL. Not "Open Source". There is a difference.
Idealism is nice and all but it doesn't get shit done.
Sorry, Dubya, but the WMDs are in another bunker !!!!!

Lost all the karma I had in the big Slashdot karma crash of 2003.
God bless you!
