I can think of a couple ways to use a black hole to generate power. Rotating black holes have huge amounts of kinetic energy, and such a hole that had an electric charge could be used as a huge generator, if we could get an electric field large enough to surround it.
The other method uses very small holes, about the size of a proton with the mass of a mountain. Due to Hawking radiation, such a hole would put out more power than a six nuclear power plants (if I remember the statistic).
I live in Montana, where there is no sales tax. Of course we do have the highest property taxes in the nation, and we don't get any money from the tourists, and we just had to come up with about $14 million to fix the budget, and the republican gov. didn't raise taxes a penny to do it...+
Actually the flow of heat from one body to another as the two move twords thermal equilibrium can be used to do work. In the device, heat is moving from an area of high tempurature, to one with a lower temperature, not the other way around.
Oh my god, your right. I don't know what I was thinking. Centripital force is m*r/v^2 (.5*m*v^2 is the kinetic energy of an object with a constant velocity (no, I'm not always this stupid)), so the centripital force should be 1.38*10^12 N.
Obviously we have very different results, and in light of my previous mistakes I am inclined to belive that my math is wrong if anyone's is.
However I am quite certain that the theory in what I said was correct. (No such thing as centrifugal accleration, large objects in space done't have weight, force of gravity must be large enough to provide centripital force, etc.)
Also, I think anyone trying to use Newtonian mechanics on this system is oversimplifying drasticly, as the orbit is obviously rather eccentric and effected by objects other than the two we are considering. Not to mention the Relitivistic effects that come into play in a strong gravitational field...
First of all the sun, or black hole, or the Earth do not "weigh" anything. They have mass. Also, there is no such thing as "centrifugal force" An object released from a circular path will follow a path that is tangential to the circle, not perpendicular. There is, however, centripital force which is in this case provided by the gravitational attraction between the star and the black hole. In any situation where an object is held in a circular path, the centripital force is equal to.5 * the mass of the object * the speed of the object squared. Using your value for the speed of the star and the value given in the space.com article for the mass (15 solar masses) yields:
The force of gravity between the two objects must be at least as great as this force to maintain the (not-really) circular orbit. Newton's theory of gravity states that the force of gravity is equal to the gravitational constant, G, times the product of the masses divided by the distance between them squared. Again using the same values, and the most common accepted value for G, we obtain:
While everything you said was correct (to my knowlege) and I agree completely, Please don't refer to "The Theory Of Everything", as it is a complete misnomer. The current goal of theoretical cosmology is to produce a theory of "Quantum Gravity" which would combine Einstienian gravatation with Quantum mechanics, producing a theory that does not break down on very large or very small scales. This is not the same as a "Theory Of Everything".
I would reference you to any number of previous discussions on slashdot (I'll go find a few and add links if anyone wants me to) where there are more people talking about their legitimately purchased games and other software. I would like to think I speak for most of the slashdot comunity when I say that of course you have a right to earn a living off of your code (or other ideas). While Open Source projects contribute more to the advancement of knowlege than proprietary ones, they don't earn anyone money. WE REALIZE THAT! Many of us write software for a living do you think we don't appreciate the ability to live off of that? If you want to talk to people who think everything should be avalible for free, go find a warez channel on irc. To talk to intelligent human beings please treat us as such.
The point is that an issue that is undergoing some debate domesticly is being debated abroad as well. The copy protection in games/music cds/dvds/etc. isn't there as much for script kiddies who want to burn copies for their freinds as it is for the people in "shitty little third world aisian countrys" who are more likely to buy a bootleg copy than a real one.
It's people who think that America is the only place that matters who are make the rest of the world hate us. If you are too stupid to realize that everything you do is affected by the rest of the world, you are too stupid to post on slashdot.
I just bothered to run a virus scan today, and I had 157 instances of Klez, despite never having uninstalled Outlook
P.S. don't bother telling me I need to use linux. I already know I do.

we suspect certain people of perpetrating this series of crimes

And Unreal Championship is just UT 2003, except worse...
mine as well... perhaps the next poll could be "how many thought of the foundation when you read this article"

I thought we quit ripping things of off futeramma because of ...umm....

Which is clearly large enough to hold the star in orbit.

Then why are you posting here???????

it would seem that there is a direct relationship between the number of Microsoft products on a machine and how suceptable it is to viruses...
