  4. Not so bad really ... on EC Approves Unconditionally Sony-BMG Merger · · Score: 1

Vivendi was on the side of digital music distribution. Sony wants to get more heavily into that arena. It made business sense for them to make this purchase if the company was for sale. There were few corporations/entities that could afford the pricetag.

Apple was concerned that if Sony also had BMG that they would try to limit content to not only iTunes but to Napster, and Real, and the (insignifcant) others.

I think as long as music is not limited to exclusive distribution just to push the lame ATRAC standard, then I'm not for or against this deal. In fact, if the 2000 people are being laid off, that means cost savings. Possibly, it means better management. Which possibly could mean cost savings to consumers.

Anyone want a Sony Music Store code: CH4NHPCRKPGH - I find it ironic that I have a Mac and I got this song off a Big Mac - The Sony Connect Music Store won't work on Macs.

You agree with a troll then:

    1) Guns are pre emptive - a person with a gun is MUCH more likely to be able to persuade someone with a knife to drop it.

    2) A criminal with a gun (who can get them in many more ways than you know how legally) can get them illegally and then just KILL you from far away. If he knows you don't have a gun, he knows you won't fight back

    3) Guns are used for hunting as a sport but ALSO as animal control - New Hampshire has a DEER PROBLEM - set out traps and dogs and cats get in them

4)There is a thing called target practice - it's fun - you should try it.

    5) Gun gauranty by constitution is there for YOUR protection against the government. Individuals COULD ban together and actually fight back against the military if they so choose - why do you think the white man conquered the Native Indians so easily? We had guns, they didn't. If our government ever decides they want your land or don't like you and pass a law to take your stuff or your rights - you have no defense - you have no gun.

    6) It is NOT proven that in the United States gun control would or does prevent crime - other countries are exactly that - other countries.

    7) Forget the black market - criminals know clever people that can make guns - you probably don't know how to make anything or aquire anything that can defend you other than a close combat device.

    8) Maybe there WILL be a time in the future you might need to hunt for food. And actually there are more people than you think that do.

    9) Any law that prevents a law abiding citizen from doing anything - gives a priveleddge to a criminal.

  12. ARM used to produce chips on ARM: The Non-Evil Monopolist · · Score: 1

Actually they do - or at least they used to - they contract manufactured ALL of the chips in the Newton.

I believe Texas Instruments and Sharp made them for Apple but the CPUs in Newtons are stamped with ARM on them whereas XScale and StrongARM also have Intel, etc on them.

  13. One possible reason... on ARM: The Non-Evil Monopolist · · Score: 2, Informative

One possible reason may be because ARM is actually a recent entity to marketshare.

If you remember ARM got its start by producing a mobile chip that was similar to the PowerPC and fast enough for Apple's Newton line.

It was very ironic that Palm decided to use Apple's desktop chip (the 68030) - which devloped into the Dragonball processor. And to me, this is one reason that only recent Palm offerings even come close to the Newton.

ARM holdings MAY not have been in any hot seat because of Apple.

While I don't think Apple owns any more shares in the company, at one point, they owned a majority stake. Sales of ARM stock ended up being a saviour to Apple's bottom line. This is one of the MAIN reasons Apple discontinued the Newton (or Jobs chose to axe the Newton) Myths place it on revenge against Sculley and on product consolidation. When, in fact, Jobs saw it as opportunity to fudge a bottom line and to gain research and development dollar for the iMac line.

THIS - is one reason I think ARM isn't considered a monpolist - after all - Apple owns 100% of the Apple market and they aren't considered a monoplist - ARM is still benefiting from this relationship.

    Found this in metamod -

You don't bring up a good analogy with cars and speeding -

Cars go faster than the posted speed limits because

    A) Cars are international - you can drive a car overseas/they are sold overseas where there are very high speed limits or no speed limits.

    B) Many car companies have argued that high speedometers save lives - merging for instance is actually a legal means of breaking the speed limit. If you get pulled for speeding during a merge and were not speeding for more than 1/4 mile - you can get out of the ticket.

"Incidentally, unlike speeding, no one was ever killed by someone using a P2P application to break the law."

You don't know this to be 100% true either. Some local band could've found out someone was putting their music online and then "rubbed them out" for it.

You took the parent's "some" comments and turned them in to all comments and tried to make a point with analogies that didn't fit in this case.

  21. Re:won't the small size also affect image quality? on A Video Projector That Fits In Your Pocket · · Score: 1

Actually in the aricle it's very confusing:

"Key to the device's diminutive size is the lack of lenses and high-power light bulbs. Conventional digital video projectors form images by generating a small picture on a transparent microdisplay inside the projector, then shining a high-power light through the microdisplay to a large magnifying lens.

In the researchers' design, a two-dimensional hologram is shown on the microdisplay rather than an image, and the projected image is formed by shining a laser beam through the microdisplay, which scatters the light into a particular pattern. "No lenses are required -- the projected image is formed entirely by diffraction"

To me that seems to be the same thing. The diffraction has to be achieved by glass or a prism of some type! Right?

Also, there ARE STILL microdiplays being used. Right now, these displays are STILL plagued with resolution problems and currently on glass - maybe soon on OLED - and wouldn't a laser cause such displays to fade or burn in?

  22. won't the small size also affect image quality? on A Video Projector That Fits In Your Pocket · · Score: 4, Informative

If the size of the lens makes a difference in CCDs in camcorders (moreso than digital cameras) - won't the small size also affect image quality from these devices?

  23. Re:Clearing out old inventory? on Apple Delays New iMac · · Score: 4, Interesting

It isn't true at all, if you go through their 10K report you'll see that they hold about 16-18 days worth of inventory.

The average person doesn't even keep up with release news. None of my 200 clients or so had even heard that there was a World Wide Developer Conference or that Apple had introduced new displays.

The real reason is supposedly two fold.

IBM is JUST NOW catching up with demand on PowerMacs for the G5. This computer will most likely be a G5. Demand is expected be met within the next few days to a week and then production in Taiwan on the new design iMac (most likely with a G5 but definitely with an IBM chip) will begin.

We'll most likely see 1.6 1.8 and 2.0 single versions - the iMac will become Apple's single processor line and the Pro line will be it's dual processor line. As you can imagine, that's a lot of chips to produce.

Apple is changing it's patterns, instead of building demand only to not ship and customers losing interest, they are building interest THEN shipping on time. This has pretty much been on the advice of IBM - and after the intro of 2.5 Ghz G5s and the backtrack on 3Ghz.
