Call it conspiracy: I believe that Virus companies are partner, liason, originator, friends with, creators of a MAJORITY of the viruses that hit the internet. Think about it. If profits or revenues are down - what's the best way to sell software? A need for the software you sell, right? It is an ethical, moral question, but I honestly don't leave it beyond a company in today's economy/world. The interesting thing is a lot of former Symantec employees are paid EXTREMELY big retirement bonuses - my guess as hush money, not necessarily for KNOWING, but for research and development of viruses and security holes in products. I also think former and current disgruntled Microsoft, Cisco employees "join up" with and provide resources for Virus companies and hackers to exploit problems.

There comes a point where computers and interfaces are either so easy that they become too difficult for an adult mind to understand, or so difficult, that it becomes easy to critcize them; or not use them at all.

That was the general idea of his comment. The thing that most people don't understand in the hardware/software innovation areas is that Speech Recognition, Gestures, Pen input is all great, but with clunky interfaces, poor pattern problems, and standardized, almost Pavlovian use of keyboards for input and mice for movement on a screen. Very few, if any are ever gonaa change unless you do something radical like Apple Computer and just make it standard. IE, they pushed USB and no floppy and have had a 70% adoption of the two concepts.

This is the general reasoning behind the PDA adoption rate. Who wants to look at a tiny screen? But really, who wants the frustration of character recognition, "I WROTE D DAMMIT, not an O!" (only a small population, even in face of lots of units sold, actually learned Graffiti well enough to use it)

I much prefer playing "Fester's Quest" and THE BEST VERSION OF TETRIS HANDS DOWN EVER + Monopoly with really good "cheater AI opponents" and Wall Street Kid - all on the road with my PowerBook or having it placed on my desktop.

I really find nothing special about the mod. You could also buy "REconnect" from a hardware store or Radio Shack. It kinda refurbs faulty or bad current flow due to wear, soiling, shorting, or small connection.

  8. Agreed but not a balanced assesment on Linux to Power Most Motorola Phones · · Score: 2, Insightful
It's agreed that most Moto phones have clunky feeling interfaces, Moto is slow to innovate, and the battery life is something to be desired. Until rececently, I had owned Moto Cell Phones for 4 years(split by one year with a Nokia). The first one I had for Cingular was great. Great reception, large display, clear numbers, backlight, and data connection. Then I got a Vader v60. It was very tiny (something I like), you could compose ringtones (something important to me), and it took standardized accessories. Battery life in about 3 months dropped to about 30 minutes talk time 4 hours standby (tested with two pnones after trade ins and different batteries).

All that said, Nokias have cool games, so many accessories and addons it's almost hard to fathom. BUT, they get VERY poor reception across the board. My Mitsubishi phone had great reception, great battery life, took standard home accessories, and was easy to navigate; but was basic and sorta heavy, not clunky like the "sattelite phone sized original analog Motos" but still clunky.

The point is, every phone has it's problems. My current is a Sony Ericcson t68i, I like it more than any phone I have ever had. I just feel like I'm going to break it. Accessories are few and far between, and the neat features need refinement.

As for Moto embedding Linux, this will only be of use if they can get full functionality of a small PC by using the PowerPC, iPod like size (with hard drive of iPod too), color screen, great battery life. Then, maybe if it can run some of the Mac emulators out there under it's Linux, like the Sharp Zaurus can, then that would be beyond useful, if not revelutionary.

I bought a nondocsis cable modem on eBay for $75 - this was when they had JUST introed cable modems in my area in 1996. They just reduced my bill by $11.

Cable companies are not regulated like Telecom companies, so I doubt Power Suppliers would be either.

This has bee the ONLY viable competition for cable TV and broadband EVER. Sattelite is "too tech" for a lot of people. Some people don't want others playing with the corner of your house to plop a trash can lid with RCA SONY or Dish embossed on it.

I have had this question for a long time. A unit this powerful would seem to be able to at least have the speed to run it well. Does the Zaurus run a "standard brew of Linux" that regular Linux programs can be added? If not, how could it be recompiled to do so. Think about a PDA with Photoshop (3.0 would run great) - Mac OS 8.1 with Kaleidoscope to make it look like X.

Also if such an implementation was made, would the stylus work? Is it recognized as a mouse?

I run Linux PPC on my Apple Network Server (originally could only run AIX on these) Not Mac OS. I then run mac on Linux VERY FAST, faster than a 200Mhz 604e machine NORMALLY runs it. Although my other machines don't have 3 -15K RPM 16MB cache SCSI Drives and 1 gig of interleaved memory. Still, I would think that flash based memory would give a great "interaction" boost as well.
