    I'm not joking, people really go to prison for taking pictures of their kids playing in the tub or similar benign activities.

    This isn't the law as it is taught to state troopers in New York:

    Firefox is used among all serious internet users (half of them call it foxfire, but who cares...

    serious as in posting to Slashdot, or serious as in ordering from Netflix, Rhapsody and Amazon.com? most website developers program for a market and not from their heart.

    If enough sites recommend Firefox/SVG, it would go a long way toward encouraging other browsers to support SVG--an *open* standard, putting us in a position again of not needing to recommend a browser and possibly knocking out a proprietary format or two in the process.

    It isn't the number of sites that matter, it is their success in reaching beyond the Slashdot demographic. Preaching to the choir gains you nothing.

    SVG could become the Ogg Vorblis of graphic formats. It's out there, but arrived too late and no one much cares.

    You need a factual dispute to get and keep your case before a jury. If it is generally agreed that you uploaded files and can't produce a license to distribute them, there is nothing left for a jury to decide.

    Repeat after me: The RIAA have not yet sued anyone. They have applied extortion using the threat of a costly legal battle involving megacorporation vs one individual

    settlement out of court is the norm in civil cases and talk of extortion is just so much hot air.

    Remember, the cops don't need to tap your phone if they already have enough evidence to convict you! And if they don't have enough evidence to convict you of criminal activities without damning phone records, they probably don't have much of a case!

    Why is it that no one here ever quite grasps the distinction between the "probable cause" needed to initiate and pursue a criminal investigation and the burden of proof on the state when a case goes to trial?

    I think everyone should be responsible for his own safety. I am using a VoIP phone and I have the five most important local emergency numbers taped right next to it. Is it that hard?

    It can be very hard when you are disoriented, in pain, cannot speak, cannot breathe, or when there is smoke and fire and your kids are trapped, and the simplest of tasks becomes damn near impossible.

    911 works because it is simple and pervasive, a four year old can understand 911, guide dogs and other service animals have been trained to use 911 call buttons.

    Dell refused to put the parts, which probably cost them £0.02p, in a normal envelope so that one of us didn't have to stay inside all day waiting for a parcel and also to save Dell costs but noooo.... it had to be couriered in case the parts got damaged - they're flippin' rubber feet

    when you are big enough to contract for courier service at the price Dell pays, then we can talk about costs.

    Seriously, isn't Streaming Audio/Video just another solution searching for a problem that isn't there? Why should I use Streaming Media and suffer from bad quality, have to disable my other uses of my connection, risk having to wait for re-buffering,...

    When I get home from work, I want to wind down, relax, click on a favorite radio station, and just sit back and listen. P2P was fun, but I no longer have the time for it.

    When was the last time someone was provided on the job training for MS Office?

    at any given time there are at least a half-dozen local schools, colleges and community outreach servives offering courses and certification programs for MS Office workers. marketable skills in a very tough environment, and a reliable source of income for those providing the training. at ground level, knowing OpenOffice.org doesn't open any doors.

    Foreign registed ships have the right to employ foreigners without local visas, within both the 200 mile economic zone & the 12 mile line.

    The question is whether the U.S. has the right to suppress operations of this sort within its 200 nm economic zone of protection. I suspect it does.

    If they are really talking about 200 miles out to sea (outside of the U.S. Economic Zone), yes, you can indeed shut down and drift as long as you want.

    well, yeah, theoretically. but is this the way to treat the engines of a cruise ship? and how long will it take to regain control of your vessel when you need it?

    Within the EEZ, the coastal state has jurisdiction with regard to establishing and using artificial islands, installations, and structures having economic purposes as well as for marine scientific research... exclusive economic zone

    I rather doubt the Coast Guard or Navy will have any difficulty claiming jurisdiction over a vessel that is more or less permenently "anchored" within 200 miles of the U.S. coast.

    One assumes that its not going to be continuously moving around so it wont need quite as much fuel

    You will need diesel for everything. Light and power. Air conditioning Cooking. Refrigeration. De-salinization. 500 people will go through tons of consummables very quickly. Do you re-suppply by small boat or air? You can't simply shut down your propulsion system and drift in the sea lanes three miles off the LA coast.

    Competitors? What competitors? The AP alone employs 3,700 people and feeds stories to 15,000 print and broadcast subscribers world-wide.
