They're being protectionist dickheads with a $400 music player, no two ways around it. You can try to placate yourself any way you want but this behavior is exactly what slashdotters rail against every day.

I used a regular BT8x8 card in a 1400 for a long time as my main Myth machine. I even had that card in a 1ghz machine for a while and they both seemed to handle encoding sufficiently -- although I think the 1ghz was recording at 320x240 for a 19" TV. You can feel the reduction in CPU utilization you get from a hardware encoder in the snappiness of the menus and video searches and such but even a modest machine should be able to software-encode video reasonably.

The latest uber-MMORPG that revolutionizes the genre and flips the industry on its ear! This one's larger, prettier, faster, flashier, and beats out every other MMORPG to date...

...just like every other MMORPG before it. I give it a month before people start to get tired of it. Before tons of elves start bitching about how their class got nerfed or the magic users are unbalanced or the economic system is skewed. Another few months after that all the l337 WoW players that are 42 levels above any normal player are in every town on the map while Joe-gamer grinds away the free hour or two of free time he has per night trying to get *anywhere*. A few months after that this MMORPG sits on a shelf next to SWG and EQ Expansion #7 and instead of being $40-50 out Joe-gamer is down about $90. He spent more money and less time on this than he did on San Andreas but got really good at repeating the same 4 in-game actions over and over and over again. All the gaming sites come to the realization that, while slightly cooler than the other MMORPGs this one sucks too and anything where there are a 'massive' number of people all doing the same thing you're doing for the millionth time isn't a game at all, it's a poor facsimile of the worst part of life... work.

But I just might be a cynic.

eh? Acts of terrorism are stable if not on the rise. So, we haven't been bombed on American soil in 4 years? That's not something to brag about.

Story 1 -- global terrorism rose in 2002
Story 2 -- global terrorism sucks. US may be as safe as we were since 9/11 but reelection may prompt new acts
Story 3 -- Rise in terrorism in 2003 over 2002. (Note in the first article 2002's numbers were understated though.
Story 4 -- Lebanese, people who actually know something about terrorim, see 100% rise due to foreign policy.

I think that's the point a lot of 'techies' are getting at: "Wow... you did all that crap. The same crap you could do on a $250 i386 Linux box. So you're paying $2000+ for the GUI?" Most hardcore techies outpace what the GUI offers them which is why KDE and Gnome were so poor for so long. They'd rather buy 8 $250 boxen, do 8x the crap and deal with the less flashy but still flashy enough lights.

I'm not saying it's right, just how it is. I must admit, if money weren't an obstacle I'd splurge on the pretty pictures too. But since money is always an obstacle my 6 x86 boxes will have to do.
