    there is a very cheap water filter already
    put your water in PET bottles and put it on your roof
    the UV (what ever you call this in english) lightwaves will kill the bacteria
    ok, you have to live in a place with sunny weather

    amd64 works quite well
    you will have no flashplugin in 64 bit browsers (you can use the 32 bit ones anyway), some trouble with games and other 32 bit binary applications

    they demonstrated it on tv running linux and osx on it (illegally)

    i had no problems with ati and 2.6 on gentoo
    it think the ati drivers are more solid then the nvidia onces ...
    once they are up to date it will be very interessting which work better

    i think you are a bit wrong about what hardware goes in such recycling programs
    i think at the moment it is more like 200 - 800 MHz systems
    there may be companys which have still 486 in use
    but most have changed to newer versions of windows and office which use more system resources

    i got the cpu replaced on warranty and overclocked again ( even more) but no more seti
    the new cpu still lives ... 2 years later

    the only situation you pay for incoming calls is if you are abroad with your cell phone

    you can just download the packages and the rsync tree to a cd and then copy it to the pc without internet
    i think there are even cds provided with the most important packages
    for me personally it is easier to run gentoo then to get all the needed packages for fedora/wHatever
    with gentoo i have a distro i know quite well which provides a clean update path without throwing everything over all 6 month

    i think it is just stupid to eat bananas which use over 1 L of kerosene / kg
    or to drive some beef from germany to italy for slaugther and then drive it back to the consumers in germany
