  1. Share the resignation letters! on Computer Jobs -- How to Resign Professionally? · · Score: 1

When I was working for a Big 5 firm, we were going under a fairly intense restructing due to people leaving. So many people were leaving, that guarenteed every Friday we'd have a farewell party.

It got so bad that the Partners tried to curb the "celebrations" - hilarous.

A resignation letter had been circulating around the office, so it was basically a cut-paste jobbie for most people resigning. I can only imagine the HR department having a laugh.

I still felt I left on fairly good terms, even offered them to walk me out the building but unfortunately they didn't. I had my bags packed and everything! So if you got paid out, be happy. Don't be offended - its just business.

Needless to say I walked into the next job, paying double the salary.

    Good times.

No matter what Novell/SuSe say, changing the default window manager to GNOME is the first indication that Novell wants to shift focus to the free GTK toolkit.

You can put as much sugar on the subject as you like Novell PR, the proof is in the pudding.

Only offering KDE support to technical-savvy users that know one window manager from the other is an attempt to appease the well-grounded pioneers of the SuSe platform.

It is clear that this is a business decision to change the default to GNOME, and for all their newly created Mono tools to be used throughout all desktop offerings.

You can bet your bottom dollar that those Mono related Novell tools that will be created in the future will not be written also with the QT libraries. This doesn't make good business sense.

So the fact remains, the users that choose KDE will be short changed. A dependancy to run those new Novell tools on GTK libraries will be a requirement within KDE - mark my words.

My recent purchase of a powerbook has re-affirmed my initial gut feeling towards the Linux desktop (I have been a Linux fan/developer since the mid 90's), that collaboration simply isn't on the proverbial menu.

    Welldone mate on the explanation.

Just one or two things worth noting:

    1) Depending on the size of the company and how slick their processes are will determine how they handle the purchasing of the laptop. For instance, my company isn't so up to scratch and the salary sacrifising just been launched - I had to buy the laptop out of my own money, and then send the invoice to our third party salary sacrifice partners. On my next pay, the pre-tax dollars were sent to the salary sacrifice partner who then would forward the money to me. Yep - its a bit silly but its how they do it here. I know some companies like you mention will do the buying for you thus will be much more transparent but not necessarily..

    2) The number of sacrifise payouts is based on your salary. If you're earning 90K+ (or so) you can definately obtain the pre-tax payout in one lump sum.

I used to love MySQL back in the hayday, but then they changed their license model, thus it was "good night sweet prince".

Most other decent databases use something similar to LGPL for use of their libraries, thus there is no need to disclose your source code in an application that uses the database. This is rather a critical feature identified by almost all database vendors. Even Microsoft SQL has an LGPL-like license that doesnt mean you have to share your code.

Once MySQL was reaching critical mass, they decided to change the rules and restrict the license. PHP and others revolted and dumped MySQL for SQLite as the default database for PHP 5. Some could argue it was due to library mixup hell, with multiple versions of libraries on the system, but we all know the main reason was behind the license.

MySQL got a bit scared and made this silly license exception to the top 20 FOSS projects (don't quote me on that, recalled from memory) so they could be LPGL.

In the process I moved all my code to PostgreSQL and havent looked back.
