Oh yes thats right, if its not done the "US way" instead of a democratic model like the UN then its not good enough.

Shit all over the UN if you will, but its the closest thing the world has to a level playing field - and thats a fact.

Actually scrape the looking out your backyard, lately, the US has had the run of the playground in areas of Iraq and Saudi Arabia. Ohhh thats right, its because the oil is there - sorry I forgot. For a moment I thought the US was protecting the best interests of their citizens, but instead they were looking after Uncle Sam and the massive gobs of cash to be made in the self interest of private enterprise.

This is a complete generalisation but of all the countries in the world, the US would have to be the most blind - which is suprising given its severe economic influence. I travel the world with my job all the time and you think you have it all - which you don't.

There is some beautiful countries out there, all I'm saying is look around - you'll be surprised what you find.

This is just another example of why I am glad to live here in the United States of America. We may complain about things from time to time, but at least we do have more freedom of information and able to know more, then most other countries out there.

You'll be suprised how many countries there is actually out there.

*Most* countries have the same body of regulators, have you heard of this thing called the UN? Check it out same time, you'll find a lot of countries "doing the right thing" in terms of freedom and law.

Mod me down, but I hope that one day the US citizens will look outside the scope of their backyard once and while.

  11. Re:Its all in the hardware on Linux Five Years Away From Mainstream · · Score: 1

Because since linux is mostly a from source OS with constant changes, the model is totally different. With a mac its done via s/w update patches, if a critical security patch is provided for Linux and an update to the Kernel is required - you could be screwed. But possiby not with other close sourced systems ala mac.

Anyways, the point wasnt totally about closed source, its around vendors fully supporting their drivers and hardware from what is a primiarly a from source operating system.

  12. Its all in the hardware on Linux Five Years Away From Mainstream · · Score: 3, Interesting

When Linux supports the full range of hardware that is currently under NDA's and vendors that refuse to "support" Linux other than supplying tainted binary kernels; then and only then will Linux be ready.

I personally have moved to a mac because I couldnt wait any longer. Will revisit Linux on the desktop in maybe 3 - 5 years.

Usually what happens when something goes IPO is their product offerings will go up in price before the IPO is sought.

I hope either way that they continue to develop fine products and keep the prices at a reasonable level.

Their prices are purely driven by what the market is prepared to pay, and from it seems the introduction to these tools at a commerical level is fairly steep in price for a small commerical developer.

On a side note, I would love to see a new ISO C++ standard (royalty free) to especially cater for cross platform GUI development.

What, however, would be far more sensible is being paid by the project with a given deadline.

You've hit the nail on the head. Well in regards to my work thats certainly the case. I've been doing consulting in security for the past 6 years and my proposals always have a few basic things:

    1) Hours needed to complete task
    2) Deadline set for the draft report
    3) Total cost of the job

Hours needed to complete task does not necessarily equal to the exact deadline because I'm juggling other stuff (or just plain goofing off)

I might sit at home on my laptop for 5 or 6 hours of the day and write a report but the other 2 hours I'm sitting up a cafe up the road, or reading a book or listening to some music.

  17. FUD on OpenOffice 2.0 vs. MS Office Review · · Score: 4, Insightful

This is a complete hands-on review from someone who has used the product religiously for years. And I think you'll see why OpenOffice 2.0 truly Kicks MS Office around the block.

It was a one page review with some luke-warm analysis of some of the functions of either product. Nothing really in-depth here. Rambles a whole paragraph about PDF exports which is kind of irrelevent. I have a PDF phaser that I use to export to PDF, let the processor do the real word processing.

I have been using Word as a power user writing on average documents up to 300 pages a shot. Sure, Word has some shortfalls - I have seen times when a doc has shit itself in a few rare occasions. I have tried Oo, its quite good but I think it has a few more years to catch up to anything remote to Word. And I love Linux! Its unfortunate that I am stuck with Office in some respects, although no religious war will win me over when you have no choice but to be 100% collaborative with other Word users on very large documents, the slightest change to the formats can screw you big time, no Word importer will do.

I recently moved to a mac with Office 2004 which isnt bad although I'm still trying to get use to less use of shortcuts that arent consistant with the Windows version. I only moved to the platform for the *nix backend and to ability to contine my c++/dev hobbies outside of working hours on a platform built for development.

Saying that I think Oo has a real chance, especially in areas of the free market, small business, students and home users.
