  1. Laws are only one solution... on Telcos Play Both Sides of Telemarketing War · · Score: 1

Every company wishes they had a set-up like this. We can't assume that they will police themselves. Passing a law is only one solution... passing along information for free is another (not that /.'ers needed to know that).

Ex: Don't buy a TeleZapper, record the tones you hear when you get a disconnected number on your answering machine, with your funny message right after it. This will fool the telemarketers dialing software and eventually you'll get no more unwanted calls.

Has anyone noticed that General Motors is selling cars equipped with XM Radio. This will hide the initial cost well, since no one thinks about that when its included. 15. right and wrong... on ADA Doesn't Apply to Web · · Score: 1

I agree with the judges ruling that the web does not fall under the scope of the ADA, because the ADA was not designed with the internet in mind and trying to make it fit would cause chaos. The web is a public place of commerce, however, so the same rationale that created the ADA will create the eADA. This is a good thing, if accommodation is good at all. The difference will be that Congress can codify the specific requirements in a way that will set bright lines on what is legal and what is not. This would significantly decrease the number of lawsuits brought against companies.

This all depends, of course, on Congress actually taking the time to THINK about the issue and get the public opinion, then write a decent law... the law is coming, just don't know how good it will be.

  16. they have a niche... on Xandros 1.0 · · Score: 2, Insightful

It is obvious from their website that, as has been stated already, they are not marketing to you or I. This is being marketed for businesses and for individuals who are getting sick of Microsoft but need to stay compatible with its productivity software and needs everything graphical. You don't have to sell to everyone to make a profit in business.

In fact, having a niche is a strength, not a weakness. Think about the rise of the SUV. So many people liked the functionality of a truck (riding high, cargo carrying, not being tied to pavement) but many didn't want to drive a truck, either because of the look or because of less passenger room. The SUV fits the niche between the two nicely, and you can't drive 10 seconds without seeing one. Of course, some will stick with their trucks, others loyally to their cars, but the SUV makers will rake in the dough. What's $99.00 for a functional solution that is taylored to someone's needs.

I think that they will do well with this.

The #1 reason that I have seen for hardware failure was that the PS fan had stopped working and no one noticed. Most PC's (bought or built) are designed to pull air in the front of the machine because of the vaccuum created by the PS exhaust fan. No air flow = stagnant hot air = hot heatsinks = hot chips = CRASH. This is a very important component that is often overlooked.

Legislation and regulation of technology happens so quickly that people read about the decisions after they have been made and only after it is too late to give any input. Where is the public debate about these issues? It is often limited to places like /. where only a small portion of people can/will take part.
