We pay for the stolen goods in the form of higher prices. Fuck that. Let them get a job and buy their own crap.

  11. Am I alone in hating this movie? on Spaceballs Animated Series in Production · · Score: 1

I was in college when it first came out, saw it in the theaters with a bunch of friends. They liked it, I thought it was stupid. I think I'm alone in hating this movie...not just hate, but loathe. It's one of the worst movies ever...right up there with "Mad Dog and Glory". I like other movies by Mel Brooks...Blazing Saddles is hilarious, but Spaceballs, no.

  12. Re:Advertising opportunities on Internet Giving Homeless a Home · · Score: 2, Interesting

I never give money directly to panhandlers. The panhandlers I routinely run across are either able to work and choose not to (I'll talk to these and ask about their situation - for example, one woman said her family was living in a hotel because their house burned down; another woman said she couldn't work because she had a "high risk" pregnancy, even though she wasn't showing at 6 months and could stand on the median for 8 hours a day holding a sign) or are so deep into the bottle (or pipe or needle) that spare change will only help keep them off their feet.

If someone says they're hungry and I have food with me, I will give them food. If I'm walking down the street and someone says they're hungry and there's a place to buy food, I will buy them food. That's the only direct assistance I will provide. I'll give money to agencies to help these people but not to the people directly.

I'm not unsympathetic to the plight of the homeless. I used to work in a shelter for homeless families (as staff and as a volunteer) so I'm well aware of how people become homeless.

To sum up my counterpoint, don't give generously to homeless people directly. Buy them a meal or some groceries, and give generously to agencies that aid homeless people.

Oh, and it's pretty funny that your national anthem is the same tune as O Christmas Tree (yes yes, we have To Anacreon in Heaven, I know).

Let's see, what other group is funny? Ever hear the acronym "DWO"? Driving while oriental...there's a good subject. Why are asians such horrible drivers? They're up there with the blue hairs. They're certainly not the worst in the world...of the places I've been I'd have to say Saudi Arabians are pretty horrible...no, not horrible. Crazy. Just plain insane. I hear, though, that in India it's best to hire a local driver rather than rent a car.

But back to jokes...probably in the US the only safe subject is white males...if you're a white male that is. If you're not a white male you're allowed to make fun of whatever group you belong to *and* white males.

People must be tired to mod you up. Performance isn't really an issue anymore and hasn't been for a couple of years. Blaming any perceived slowness on Swing is like saying C++ is slow because of Windows overhead. Most Java code doesn't make use of Swing (think server-side). As for the "122 ms", well, you just made that up.

Other problems with your post: Eclipse is an application; Swing is a language feature. A Smalltalk derivative (Squeak) is not a suitable replacement for Java. I'd go so far as to say Ruby and Python aren't either, though both are very powerful and are better suited to some tasks than Java.
