  1. eMusic does NOT equal Rhapsody on Jobs Says People Don't Want to 'Rent' Music · · Score: 1

You really do need to do more than read the headlines. eMusic is subscription ONLY in the sense that you pay a regular monthly fee. It is nothing like Rhapsody or Napster - there is a set limit on the number of tracks that can be downloaded for the selected subscription rate, and the music you download has no DRM (it's strictly MP3). If you cancel your account, you keep your tracks.

But all of the "all in one" types with the built in monitor are a fricking nightmare. Where have you been for the last 18 months? The latest iteration of the iMac (the "all in one" models you must be talking about) are almost completely user accessible. In fact, when there were noise problems with the Rev. A version, Apple was sending out the mid-planes directly to the users for replacement. I'll agree that the "sunflower" model was not terribly accessible, nor was the original CRT iMac, but the flat panel is incredibly well designed from an accessibility standpoint. Adding RAM is a snap - just look at this diagram http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303 084. In fact, there is a whole list of things you can replace on your iMac - all involving opening up the back of the computer http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=868 12.

I don't have to mention Dashboard (don't use Widgets), I don't have to mention Spotlight (it works great), and I even don't have to mention any of the dozens of interface and under-the-hood improvements that Tiger implemented. In fact, I am going all the way back to Panther to give an example of why OS X is more beautiful, exciting and uplifting than anything that could ever come out of Big Redmond.

    In a word: Expose http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/expose/.

Instantly access any open window with a single keystroke. Display all open windows as thumbnails, view windows of the current application or hide all windows to quickly locate a file on your desktop. Spotlight may make finding things easier, but for sheer ass-over-teapot improvements on the usability of a computer, in an elegant and simple way, Expose is the hands down winner.

"Most songs, aside from the really good ones, suck after about three years (people do grow up)." What a selfish, short-sighted dweeb you are - probably the only "music" you listen to is Top 40 crap, that has all the mental staying power of cotton candy on a hot day. Any about as much value.

Is it worth mentioning that Queen Latifah has a celebrity playlist on iTunes? Would think that she'd have some exclusive deal with M$, if she's gonna be hanging with the Gates.

  7. Re:Cent of Blood in the Water on SCO Puts a Cap on its Legal Expenses · · Score: 1

Your calculations aren't quite correct. Billable hours and working hours are not equivalent. Associates in a law firm generally need to bill 2000 hours per year, which is about 38.5 hours a week. However, rarely can an attorney bill for every minute of a work day. The average attorney will be able to bill about 2/3's of the day, which means that most associates work about 60-80 hours a week. Walk into any major law firm around 8 - 10 pm - and it's often just as busy as it is at 3 - 5 pm. I know it's fun to bash lawyers, but consider these facts: Without lawyers, there would be no Constitution or Bill of Rights. The Southern Poverty Law Center is staffed by, gasp!, lawyers - who have risked their very lives to ensure voting rights, enforce desegregation laws, and obtain civil remedies for those whose lives have been damaged or destroyed by hate. Without lawyers, there would have been no justice at Nuremburg, or at The Hague, or in Praetoria. Without lawyers, there would be no freedom of the press, no right to privacy, and basically very limited personal liberty. Yes - of course there are many lawyers who abuse the system for the sake of the all mighty Dollar, but then again - there are many who spend their lives defending the poor or prosecuting criminals for very little money (the average salary for a Public Defender in NY is $35k a year, a District Attorney does a little better).

Yeah, yeah - others have mentioned it, but my first thought when I saw the headline was - someone else is trying to bring back 70's tech. I remember first seeing ads for the Bonephone in Omni Magazine. They were marketed as the geek's alternative to the uber-cool Walkman. The version I recall was a long flat unit that you wore around your neck, with the sound emitters resting one your collar bone. I also seem to recall that it was pulled from the market because people were experiencing bone damage (spontaneously breaking collar bones, etc), but that might be urban myth.

You are not completely correct. GB is part of iLife which is sold as a standalone product for $49. It is also bundled with new Apple computers - every model. So, technically, if Apple didn't bundle iLife with a new computer, the price could drop by $49.

    Big f***ing whoop-de-doo.

I'd rather have my iLife than my $49.

THANK YOU! Someone has finally noted that iTunes has a streaming service - a FREE streaming service. The radio stations have been a feature since iTunes 1, and the are constantly updated - as stations cease to broadcast, they are removed, and others are added. When I was transferring my iTunes library (all 56 gb) from the old G4 to the new G5, the iTunes streaming radio service provided great background music. So - even if I had a PeeCee, why would I want to spend $120 a year to get what I have on iTunes for FREE. BTW - anyone who is interested in new sounds, from such diverse genre as ambient, new age, metal, world and classical should check out http://magnatune.com . They are a digital based independent label, and have several radio stations, providing streaming content of only their own musicians. No commercials, and rarely any call-sign interruptions - just a quick "magnatune.com" between tracks - and that is only occassionally. Unlike some of those so-called "live - 365" stations that now play commercials incessently unless you upgrade (thanks - Real Networks!).

I am thrilled to hear that the sequel to Fool's Errand is finally coming out. I actually still have my original floppy discs for FE - not that I have a working floppy drive that can read the old single-sided 440k discs.

Anyway - does anybody know if there is any plans to port the graphically fantastic Firefall Arcade, which I believe was published by Pangea. They updated it and released it in 2000, but it wasn't for OS X.
