I'm not sure what part of "The US government is responsible for infecting zillions of blacks with AIDS," mis-citing the Tuskegee experiments (which didn't infect anyone with syphilis, but rather allowed their infections to go untreated) as evidence, is being taken out of context. The same can be said for many of Wright's other ridiculous claims.

And I don't think for a minute that Barack Obama believes any of that crap. But I do question his honesty and his judgment in how he handled the whole mess, and those are issues of character that are relevant in a Presidential campaign.

Personally, even though I know elrous0 meant 4-8 years in terms of Presidential terms, I think four years is probably a reasonable estimate for a time frame in which all troops could be withdrawn if it turns out the Iraqis don't want us maintaining even a Kuwait-style military presence there. McCain has actually stated that one of his goals is to get Iraq into a condition within four years that would permit all of our combat forces to be removed (although he's in favor of having an ongoing non-combat military presence there if the Iraqi government is interested).

If it takes longer, I'm fine with that, but conditions have improved so much that I don't think it will be necessary.

(And I'm still not convinced that his wife doesn't think the guy is crazy, mainly because nobody's asked her. I disagree with you completely on that, but I do want to thank you for not trumpeting that "hundred years of war" bullshit that Obama keeps claiming was McCain's intention even when he knows damn well it wasn't.

A few years ago, when the Republicans were in control of both houses of Congress as well as the White House, Senator Harry Reid - then the Senate Minority Leader - made a comment that having the entire government under the control of one party like that was a bad thing.

    From http://www.buzzflash.com/interviews/05/08/int05032.html:

Senator Reid: The danger in a one-party system is that there's no ability to have an alternative message. When we had a Senate that was "controlled" by the Republicans but had a Democratic President, we were still a force. But once you have all three bodies under one-party control, you no longer have the ability to communicate with the American people. It makes it very difficult to communicate with the American people. That's the position we now find ourselves in. One-party government is bad for all kinds of reasons, not the least of which is there's no new ideas. It's either George Bush's way or the highway. If people don't agree with him, they'll lose their chairmanships, their subcommittee chairmanships and other goodies that the President can control. At the time I heard him say this, it was in the run-up to the 2006 election (somewhat after the interview I just linked), and it was becoming clear that the Dems were going to have control of both houses of Congress. And at the time, I was 95% certain that Hillary Clinton would win the presidency in 2008. So, I wondered exactly which of those three - House, Senate, or President - Harry Reid was planning on giving up.

Why don't they drop this schtick and give us a sequel to that halfway-decent D&D movie they made a few years back? (And no, I'm not talking about the one with Jeremy Irons.)

In the first FA, Changizi states his hypothesis that primates evolved color vision in order to detect changes in emotional state indicated by things like blushing/flushing of the face. I find this a bit problematic, primarily because it doesn't explain why our vision evolved to respond to three different wavelength ranges of light (red, green, and blue). It would make more sense to have only evolved cones responsive to red light, or perhaps red and one other color, if that were the only reason.

It seems to me that a more reasonable hypothesis is that trichromatic color vision co-evolved along with the colorings of fruits that primates would find nutritious. Emotional cues seem like a more subtle issue - as well as a mostly-solved problem - that would have taken advantage of color vision that was already partially or fully evolved.

Wikipedia notes that some British silver coins would routinely be milled down to half their original weight as nearly everyone took a little bit off the edge.

Eventually, coins could be made with milled edges, which largely curbed the practice, and today, of course, most coins are made from metals that are worth very little compared to the value of the coin itself.
