  1. Re:Intelligent File on CRF Reveals Draft of New DRM Technology · · Score: 1

I wasn't saying the idea was good. All I was saying was that it wouldn't have to let arbitrary code run to work.

It's not clear to me that it is actually an executable. "the file would set up a process" sort of implies this, but it could just as easily be a file that contains instructions for getting the file. I don't think it has to be dangerous. It seems to me it could be just as benign as regular media files.

Why do you say it's malicious cracking? It only works if you have the rights to play the song in the first place.

Shouldn't they just make the default be to buy in "Shopping Cart" mode instead of one song at a time? That way they save on the credit card transactions. (It may be the default, I can't remember, but I thought I had to change it to "Shopping Cart" mode when I tried it out.)

I was not actually saying that there was no such thing as legal filesharing, I was just pointing out that the example given was a bad one. But your point is well taken - there are plenty of things worth sharing that are legal to share.

Are you allowed to share all those files though? I was under the impression that all those songs were free to download, but that doesn't mean you are allowed to distribute them.

But won't the latency affect how long it takes to receive ACKs? So the server would end up waiting .2 s for an ACK instead of .02 s, and in that time it wouldn't be sending out any data. Wouldn't this slow your throughput?

  9. Re:how are you defining p2p? on Has P2P Become a Passing Fad? · · Score: 1

no, the www has a client/server model I guess you might be able to say it was p2p if all computers ran httpd and hosted sites, but I'd say that is stretching the definition.

The problem with the word nigger is not that it refers to black people, but that it refers to black people in a derogatory manner. At least that's how I see it. You probably meant to ask something more along the lines of, "Does that mean that in the south black people are characterized by the use of nigger?"

huh? that is just plain wrong. you don't necessarily need to install stuff. you can run off of any kind of storage. installing stuff is just to keep stuff in convenient locations, make searching for shared libraries simpler, etc. but definitely not necessary

People got pretty excited over the mars lander, and I would say that happened after most of the U.S. lost interest in the space program. It will be hard to get the ball rolling, but I get the feeling that once it is rolling, people will be excited to get behind it.
