Apple does not have the market share to present much of a threat to MS - on that I agreed. To then extrapolate that this is because of the way Apple prices their product is ludicrous. Microsoft also overcharges for their product, yet it hasn't slowed them down much. Hey - newsflash: Sony charges a lot too. It really has little to do with the topic at hand though, doesn't it? Apple could sell their kit at half price and still wouldn't do much better than double thier market share - why? because there will still be that missing application, or corporate policy or some other reason why people don't buy in. To state that pricing is the single most important thing stopping Apple from being competition to Microsoft is a gross oversimplification of matters.

But hey, if I was whoring for karma, I suppose it's as good a bait as any.

I was about to mod some posts here, but felt I had to respond to you. I agree with you that the only true competition facing MS happens to be Linux. However, I do not agree that bitching and moaning about Apple's pricing strategy has ANYTHING to do with this topic. Yes, Apple has a great OS. Yes, Apple is currently a niche player. Yes, it is also true that OS X only gives XP competition when reviewed by the critics, and not through market share. Let's not forget that Apple is a hardware company first. It's how they make money.

More to the point, it has absolutely nothing to do with how Microsoft chooses to lose money to the EU.

If you accidentally run over a pedestrian on your commute home today, do you really want them calling it murder? It is important not to call copywrite infringement misleading terms like 'theft' and noting the distinction does not imply approval for said actions.

  7. Still not theft on LokiTorrent Shut Down · · Score: 1

For you to call filesharing 'theft' is absurd and here is why: it would be the same as me getting fired and accusing my former employer of 'stealing' my potential future earnings from his company. You cannot steal potential things - only actual things. Bin Laden orchestrated a terror attack on Sept 11 that caused the stock markets to crash as well. He has been accused of many things, but has not been accused of 'theft' for the potential earnings people lost in the stock market during the aftermath.

There is nothing wrong with your approach. A gradual transition is always preferred, because if problems arise, they can be dealt with without the added chaos of everybody's computer not working. The only thing the 'pros' would do differently, would be to plan it all out beforehand, and get signoff from their superiors before it started.

Given the current business risk of operating on a virus-encumbered operating system like windows, it surprises me that a plan to transition employees has not already been started. Unless of course, the occasional couple of days of downtime is an acceptable business cost. Really, if you factor in the additional costs of running windows over running JUST ABOUT ANY OTHER OS, you could easily make a solid business case to at least INVESTIGATE the possibility of running on a more secure OS. I am sure you will find equivalent applications to replace most of your internal windows-based programs, and for the ones you cannot, there is the possibility of running them under WINE. It also would not be difficult to come up with a plan to transition your thousands of employees - and executives WILL listen if it means you could save them time and frustration. Yes, it demands work up front - but that's easier to schedule than unexpected downtime from the latest wave of viruses.

Agreed, from a consumer's point of view, the validity is next to nil. But so long as the marketing execs remain convinced that they make more money this way, things will not change. It won't be until delayed releases of movies stop pulling in consumer dollars that they will consider changing their practices. As with most things, it's a simple matter of following the money.

  18. Re:Wow, the US are behind... on New Battlestar Galactica Series Starts Tonight · · Score: 1

All valid points. Hollywood delays releasing a movie (for example) in various locations because of logistics. Sure, the media can get there right now, but your favorite action star can't be there, because he's needed for the premiere in Hollywood. How does next week sound? Oh wait, he's actually a busy guy and won't be able to fit you in until next May. Oh well...

Sure, it's a raw deal. But the marketers who push this stuff still find it to be effective to have the stars on-hand during a premiere to increase the hype and sales. So long as sales continue to be higher with the star presence, the delays will continue. Believe me, if Hollywood could clone the stars, and release all around the globe at once, they would. They know it would cut down on piracy - it burns them to know they haven't got a better way around this problem. You see, they STILL make more $$$ this way, even accounting for the piracy leaks.

The benefit is that I can get a taste of what a situation might be like without the risk of doing it for real. Like instrument flying. Sadly, there is no clear solution like that. Apple has the kludgy rip-to-cd-then-reencode workaround in place to keep the labels happy. It's to discourage piracy of music. If there was another vendor out there willing to license the AAC format (making Apple more $$$, I know..) then there would be choices to support consumer demand.

Oh who am I kidding? Apple probably has the licensing priced high enough to make it not attractive to competitors, thereby fueling their iPod sales. I'm feeling cynical today.
