  1. Re:Why the "Replace Tivo" hardon? on The Odds at Macworld · · Score: 1

Because currently Tivo's support for Apple users sucks nads. They've given up supporting AAC, TivoToGo directly, and have yet to release a standalone HDTivo. If the Mini can do it, and keep the price point _relatively_ low, they'll pick up the folks like me that have put their Tivos on the shelf and cancelled the contract.

Oh, the Justice department FINED them. Guess it'll be going to prosecute 12-year olds for mp3 swapping or some such good use. Whew, I don't know what I would have done with my $0.12 after the lawyers got paid.

I guess the fines are nice, but I much prefer a nice class action lawsuit when gouged.

Part of it would depend on how you acquired your seat of Windows. Remember that most copies are OEM, and would be tied to the hardware they shipped on. In that case, you _would_ have to buy that seat of XP if you wanted to run it on the new box.

Office etc are all the same when buying OEM. We just had a burglary a few months back, and had to repurchase Office (covered, so not a big thing,) because the CDs I had were OEM tied to the hardware that was no longer in my possession.

Every single one of them had some dig at the iPod, and then a marketing spiel about their own POS product that's in the clearance bin at Sam's. Tell us something NEW and we'll consider your product.

That's the way I read it as well, but I was (am) hoping to see an option for multiple sets. The ability to pump to multiple room sets would make it considerably more valuable to me.

As it is now, I probably won't buy one. I've got an iPod with a dock wired to the MD input on my stereo. Not much improvement to have to walk back to the iMac just to switch playlists. No, I haven't forgotten the wireless components, it's just not quite what I need.

  13. AirTunes on Apple Releases iTunes 4.6 · · Score: 4, Interesting

I'm curious to see how AirTunes works with multiple speaker sets. If I can pump the same playlist to the stereo in my front room, my bedroom, my living room and the one outside, then Apple has just sold 4 Airport Express boxes. The cost of four will be much less than the cost (dollars+personal time) of running all that wiring and getting the speaker sets to all work well.

Can't wait to get my hands on this tonight!

There are a ton of legitimate reasons to have a ton of RAM in a machine, and only about half can be written off as luxury items.

When the price of a workstation for my CAD users rises by 10% due to RAM jumps, it's a real concern and I can't tell them to play less games or ask for less RAM hungry apps. When you're configuring machines with 2GB of RAM in them. this sort of incremental price jump hurts.

They already have WMA pimps, and will have a hell of a time competing for selection since they have to stay mainstream to have their name on it. The MS iPod killer? What a joke.

This is one of those cases when MS should have just walked away. Let the other guys handle the store and drive users to your products. There's nothing to be gained.

I find it interesting to look at the number of high-end replacement devices exist for home theaters. That's a market that's added every feature known to man, and the most loved component is often the Universal Remote that can simplify it to the point of actual usability by Mom. All of the power is still there, but there's a simple, unified interface for MOST users. Apple has done the same thing for years, and does it best in OSX. All the power is there, but the usability is so great that most people never notice. Tivo is an amazingly complex system behind the scenes (by normal person standards,) but the usability is such that again, Mom can use it. You don't have to have a simple product, you just have to make it usable for simple people.
