Interestingly, I think in the expanded universe there was a big memorial service held on Coruscant for the occupants of the Death Star.
So many loyal soldiers lost, fighing for the goodness of the empire.... that sort of thing.
I haven't read this myself but have seen references to it on the SW official site.
It's kind of cool when you think about it... seeing the movie, you wouldn't immediately think that something as horrendus as the Death Star would be mourned. However, if you start to think about that the non-clones on the DS had families, and that the Empire was capable of spinning the defeat into a propaganda event, a huge memorial actually kind of makes sense.
Been working with an offshore team on a brand new project. These people are in Mumbai. It's my first time delegating work to an offshore team.
I swear to god, these guys are running a scam. The workers only get about 1/2 the work dont that I expect. I have a feeling that the developers are doing the work of more than 1 project at a time. So I suspect that they're working for my project about 1/2 the time, but billing me 100%.
I can't prove it. But I can't get these guys to get their productivity up. In a way it's bad becasue I need my project to be on time. But it's good because if this is a common practice over there, eventually someone higher up than me will figure it out and maybe, just maybe the offshoring will go away.
And for the record, I am not talking about file sharing or making copies of media. I hate the RIAA and MPAA as much as any other green blooded slashdotter.
I believe that the company is required to keep the application around for a while. Either the original or a fiche/electronic copy.
I'd ask for it and look at the signature. If it's not signed, the company has a lot of explaining to do. If it's forged, your lawyer and the police may want to talk to the guy who got the comission for the card.
I wonder if this is considered to be credit card fraud. Mail fraud? Falsifying a document?
The guy could actually be looking at doing some time. Esp if he's dont this more tnan 1X.
So like parent says, talk to a lawyer.
And for all you folks who decide to fill out these forms at the mall.... don't.... unless you like spam. And if you change your mind, take the form home and throw it away. Don't leave it there for some garbage picker to grab.
This company must have a policy of taking stuff from the return dept sealing the box without checking the contents and putting it back on the floor for sale.
I couln't tell you how many times I've bought something there that looked legit kitchen/bathroom faucets, power tools, lighting fixtures, etc only to bring them home to find that parts were missing.
Then I bring them back, pointing out that parts are missing, and get shit from the return clerk and management. "we sold it to you with the parts, why are you stealing from us?". Eventually I'd get my return after becoming very loud and agitated, and pointing out that I KNOW that they restock incomplete kits.
I've run into this in multiple stores in the NY/NJ area. I used to think it was just my bad luck until I had a conversation with a local building contractor who found the same problems.
Since there's really no place else in my area to get home supplies, I'm forced to go back to Home Depot. So I've started to open and inspect packages before I buy them. The last time I was there, security hassled me becasue I looked like I was stealing parts out of a lighting kit.
Now I only wish ATI would release LINUX drivers for their dual-monitor Radeon 8500. When I use it in X, I can only get the same workspace on both monitors.
It's stainless steel with a rubber grip. It's a heavy pen, and looks and feels more expensive than it is. It writes like a dream. I've been using them for 6 years now.
I don't think any of the games offered are worth the prices charged. The only Atari home game I'd pay those prices for is be Adventure, and this service doesn't provide it.
As far as arcade games, there's few that I'd pay for. However, if these guys were to come up with a copy of Xevious, I'd buy it in a second.
Big brother is watching.... and he's making it OK because the spying is disguised as a contest.
This is the start of something bad. Once Joe Q. Public starts to think that this is cool, he won't mind having every single thing he buys trackable by satelite. He won't even think about it, and thus he'll be a little less free.
OK, first off I'm a developer in the US working on a brand new 4 year project. I expect that I'll be in this group for at least 6 years (unless the project gets cancelled, layoffs etc).
I'm 36, and I figure that if the 'age' thing hits me, I'll have one more big project to run before I have to start worrying about work at 45 years old.
OK.
I've been thinking about using either real estate or stock market investements to raise capital to either start a business, or just live off of.
I own my home, rent out an apartment here, and between my equity and the value of my house, I can get enough $$ from a loan to buy a second property to rent(but not enough to start a business). So real estate is looking like a good place to start.
Though, a couple of good stock picks could generate some capital too.
I've also been thinking about how the heck I can use my computers to help make these ideas (or others) start to happen for me. So I've started writing some nifty little systems for myself.
The first one is code named ticker. It's supposed to be a stock tracking and analysis system. Basicly it goes out to a service each night, and gets a feed of securities data and loads it into a MySQL database. It then runs some custom analytics for me and generates some picks. I've been tracking the picks with funny-money and have been making refinements to the analysis as time goes on. This has been and on again, off again project for me for the last 4 years. Eventually, I want this thing to be able to scan news services for announcements about stocks I care about and gather the news for me. It should eventually also be able to scan the news and make me aware of stuff I didn't know about before.
Yup, there's a lot of work involved there. But with Perl, anything is possible. Impossible tasks become possible.
The real estate angle is a bit tougher to crack from a programming point of view. Most databases of info are localized MLS services, and you need to pay to get access to those. So I'm left with scanning the public internet for property information and bank rates.
So I've been working on a scanning engine, for both the stock tracker and the real estate information gathering.
Not sure how else to put my boxen to work though. I mean, they do math and repetitive tasks really, really fast. Surely there must be SOME way to use them to make money. But my tiny brain can only think of simple information gathering and analysis.
As far as the type of business I'd like to start? I dunno yet. Running a computer consuting/contract programming is out, thanks to our friends in India.
Maybe I'll open a restauraunt, or some type of store. Who knows, I've got 10 years to think up that part of the plan.
Right now, I just need to somehow make the money to do it.
Thanks. It's much appreciated.

You got modded up anyway dude. Enjoy!
Please mod parent up. That is fantastic.
Funny, Instightful. Either way, please mod this through the roof.
Good show buddy.

TG,
Thanks for that point of view. I'll keep it in mind. You're absolutely right about their perceptions of cost and savings.
I'll try to cover my ass the best I can if the offsourcers continue to not produce.

How about Pentium?
Prototype Element with No real use.
Oh wait........
Did they include that sappy 9/11 cartoon in this book? The one with the geek hugging Dust Puppy?
I suppose Illiad was trying to do 'something' to make note of the horror of that day, but I found that particular strip to be..well kind of stupid.

>>No it isn't. It's still illegal, but easy to lie about. ("It wasn't me, I never wrote that information. Someone was impersonating me.")
Except when the store has you on video paying for stuff with a credit card.
Forget it. Play the game straignt. Be honest, and don't use the card. Theft is wrong, no matter how you try to justfy or obscure it.

What will probably happen now is that Micro$ofts next security patch will include code that disables the autorun disable.
Just wait and see. I bet it happens.

Lexmark? I don't think that I see those printers when I'm out shopping. For some reason I thnk that I'm walking right past them.
I do however see the HP's and the Canon's and the Epson's.
Funny how that seems to be working out. I wonder how Lexmark's sales are doing.
