$1450? Looking back on it, I think my stepdad got hosed, he bought one for us and one for his other kids. No mouse, no CDROM, no SoundBlaster...I had to add all that crap later on. I guess it got me to to this job today. Later we bought various PackardBell, Dell, Compaq computers, but that first one was just a plain white box.
We played JetFighter, Family Feud, Oregon Trail, some shareware games....Fun times.
The bottom line is, most Macintosh computers are aesthetically pleasing as they are functional. Modern-day works of art, if you will. Most PC's are still plain, square, boxes. At least, for better or for worse, they're not all beige anymore.
Nothing like an Amazon.com or Barnes and Nobles gift certificate. Takes some of the pain out of shelling out $50 for a book that will be worthless in 2 years.
The Compaq 8000Z, $1,189 after $100 rebate. Mail-order only.
eMachines have a bad rep, but they're not a bad unit. As a former Best Buy employee, the only problems we seen were the powersupply fans going out after 2 years and making a ton of noise.
Some of my former co-workers still have some of the first eMachines running as Linux servers to this day.
I went in to Best Buy/Circuit City yesterday on my lunch hour, looking for a MP3 player to use in the car.
They were out of almost every model. The only ones they had were the mega-expensive models, and the cheap junk low-end models. All the mid-range stuff was gone.
I figured they were selling a ton of them.
Even my dad said he wanted one for Christmas. I told him he didn't have a computer. "But you can put songs on it for me."
Now that I think about it, it's probably eaiser than being 24/7 tech support for him if he got a PC.
...and settle for less, as it runs hardly any software, and end up spending even more $$$ on the Mac due to the hardware that comes standard on the "e" that is missing on the Mac.
Runs hardly any software?
We're in the Internet Age. Platform is irrelevant.
You take your Walmart PC, and I'll take my Apple.
Which of the following can I -not- do?
Buy sell items on eBay Post on Slashdot Surf the messageboards Download, edit, and print pictures from my digital camera Capture and edit video from my digital camcorder Chat on IRC Do all my C++/Java/UNIX programming, etc for school Create websites in HTML and Flash Administer my network at work Play games in MAME and NES/SNES emulators Listen to, and share MP3's Bring home Word and Excel files from work
The big render farms are distributed Linux setups. Big websites? Linux clusters. Workstations? Linux. Smaller web servers, DNS servers, firewalls? Linux.

If they don't want to play with you, start your own game.
Go to Kinkos, get some business cards made up, and go make $60-$100 an hour doing what you used to do for $15
It runs, jumps...
But, can it play DDR?
1. Take over world Autompotive market
2. Convince Western world that Anime, Pikachu, an Tamagochi is cool
3. Make robots
4. Profit?
5. Take over world
The Quake 'server' would run fine on a fast 486.
Wouldn't even want my worst enemy playing it on much less than a Pentium 75, though.
Unless I was deathmatching him, of course.
The difference here is the fact that it's a Mac, not a PC.
I mean compare the two:
Laptop
Apple Dell
Desktop
Apple Dell
MP3 Player
Apple Dell
Monitor
Apple Dell

Thomson wants to make money off MP3!
PC Software Applications
mp3 Decoder US$ 0.75 per unit or US$ 50 000.00 - US$ 60 000.00 one-time paid-up
Encoder / Codec US$ 2.50 - US$ 5.00 per unit
Let's not forget that if you want to rip to MP3 in Windows Media Player, you've gotta shell out a couple bucks for the additional software.
Welcome to 1996!
Next up:
MIDI music
Flash
Annoying Cursors
VBScript
Useless Java Applets!
486's made a good Quake server, console only...
The same thing that makes a BMW better than a Ford Taurus, or a G5 better than an Compaq Presario.

9) Coffee Table book about Coffee Tables
The "Windows" in "XWindows" refers to the GUI element, not the brand name.
Did I hear you say 3 mouse buttons?
Only 1 here.
"If online backups are so good, why don't you use them?"

Thought so...
$698 eMachine compared to a $1799 G5 or even a $1299 iMac?
I'll take the Apple.
"VoIP smell-o-vision phones hit the market"
That's the day I'm scared of
These Sub-$100 CPUs serve as decent upgrades for aging systems (e.g. the P3-800 that is barely chugging along)
I'm using a P3-550MHz, and it's fine for everything I do all day.
Can I have that 'useless' 800MHz chip when you toss it?
You sound like a troll but...
MAME32 is what you're looking for.
WTF is that supposed to sound like?
AIX?
IRIX?
Solaris?
When/where do you need these OS's anymore?

Google still decides who's in the top searches
Half the time you get results for where to buy what you are searching for, instead of more relevant information.
