  1. Isn't it Sierra they own, not Valve? on Microsoft to Buy Vivendi Games Division? · · Score: 1

Their corporate overview mentions Sierra Entertainment, as does their list of studios. The only time Valve is mentioned is on the articles reporting this. And Sierra says on their own corporate info page that they have a partnership with Valve, they don't own it. So don't sweat it yet, Half-Life 2 could still be released for Linux.

  2. Its a foreboding sign... on Michelin to Include RFID Transmitter in Every Tire · · Score: 1

That I can see three "Your Rights Online" stories on the /. front page. However, Firestone and others are quite capable of using this as a marketing advantage. Like other such privacy concerns, its a matter of how many manufacturers jump on board.

  3. Earthquake protection lies elsewhere on UnitedLinux Pushes Into Telecom Market · · Score: 0, Redundant

What has seismic protection got to do with a server (and especially on its operating system, as the article seems to imply slighty)? Shouldn't the onus be rather on the building itself, to make sure it doesn't actually fall _onto_ the server, and then ensure the server isn't going to topple over easily. Unless of course its talking about redundancy.

  6. Been done before, and it wasn't popular. on Games Controlled By An Exercise Bike · · Score: 3, Interesting

Back in the Net Bubble, something similar was installed at a gym in my city. Two bikes were rigged up so that you'd have to maintain a speed above a certain threshold. Except it didn't power games, but just a plain old browser. The only problem was that the threshold was too high, and as soon as you were able to get a page, you'd be moving too fast to read or use it at all, and as soon as you slowed to reach for the keyboard and type, the screen would go blank again.

  7. Art or propaganda? on S-11 Redux: (Channel) Surfing the Apocalypse · · Score: 5, Interesting

The thing I really didn't like about this video (aside from its political angle, but it _did_ come from GNN after all..) was its methodology of trying to create a constant stream of ideas (like a audio-visual 'stream of consciousness') out of a series of quotes taken out of context, or even cut to mean the complete opposite of what was then said. Add to that the various funny bits, such as slow framing Bush, and him umming and ahhing with the combined effect of making him appear vacant, and altogether we actually have a standard piece of propaganda: Shaping how we think through use of the media, and giving 'sound bites' to give the appearance of rational arguments, while the actual content is a lot more vacuous than it appears.

  8. Re:Subversion vs CVS on Multi-User Subversion · · Score: 4, Informative

Although there is a definite place for the "If it ain't broke, why fix it?" philosophy, its also equally often a good time to remember there was nothing broken about the horse and cart. While CVS is a good stable system that has many times over proven its worth, we also have to recognise there _are_ features lacking and issues that if corrected, would allow for greater productivity. Such as the binary file handling. Binary support in Subversion looks to be a _LOT_ easier than in CVS. Currently CVS always transmits binary files in full. And CVS does have networking issues.File differences are sent in only one direction, from the client to server, but not the other way round. And because of CVS's codebase, which is very ugly (not surprising given its history of being layers of hacks), it becomes increasingly hard to add new features. In short, we've approached the stage with CVS where a complete overhaul and restart would be better longterm.

  9. A new level of immersion - or addiction? on Project Entropia's Universe Solidifies · · Score: 1

We've all read the sad stories that emerge out of games such as Everquest and other MMPORGS. Usually the only thing that got people hooked was the social aspect - being someone and having a whole different relationship (including more respect perhaps) with people than they did in real life. It proved psychologically addictive to some, and then follow all the various articles about divorces, suicides and other unwanted news. So with a new layer of immersion to hook people - the financial one - could this not produce even more stories that we want to avoid? Could it hook people in the same way poker machines do, with the possible thrill of financial reward? Take the social addiction and devotion a normal MMPORG can provide, then add the new layer of money worries. I really hope they've got policies to deal with players who show themselves at risk.

  10. Cheap, but is it enough? on India Officially Launches Simputer · · Score: 5, Insightful

Its good to see low cost applications such as the simputer being made to help those who otherwise wouldn't have access to any such device. But I wonder, in a country as vast as India with 58 taught languages and 87 different language newspapers (http://www.abhishek.mybravenet.com/languages%20of %20india.htm), how effective would the speech recognition really be, especially when you take into account the lower literacy levels of the demograph its aimed at.

"For instance, a digital camera that carries the new algorithms could be used to gather forensic evidence for use later in a courtroom. Any subsequent manipulations of the pictures could be detected, and the area where they occurred could be pinpointed." So if I want to manipulate court evidence, what's stopping me from taking a *screenshot* of the image on screen, manipulating that image, and then re-encoding the hidden data so it appears no editing has taken place?
