  2. Two evils... What is Right? on Violating A Patent As Moral Choice · · Score: 2, Interesting

What you have here is a case of two evils. To ignore patent law to save people, or to ignore people to give into greed. The drug companies are out to make money. Not something anyone should readily discourage. However, its also a fact that many companies are doing so at the great expanse of lives or what value there drug really has.

Point in fact, for any specific drug. There is generally as much marketing money spent as R&D money spent. Often times quieting the facts of studies made or of even the true effectiveness of said drugs.
As well, often times the base research for said patents comes from Tax dollars.

Now, evils aside of the "Innocent" victims.

Bird Flu and it's variants is feared to be a global killer should it ever make it into the population at large. To not allow it to be reigned in early on would be a crime committed by all and any soverign nation. How would you like to see 1/10th of the US nationality wiped out because we wouldn't allow anyone access to such drugs? (Probably an over dramatization, but historically has happened)

Also, would research really go away??? The answer is Hell No. Research will still go on, by those who care. It went on before there where Biological Patents. It would go on after too. Penecillan didn't come about because of potentially making a multi millionairre out of the CEO.

Our Patent system is currently extremely innaccurate on what its true purpose is, which is just compenstaion. There should be a feasibilty limit on what anyone can charge for a patent in relation to its true development costs and difficulty of Idea.

I agree.. with 1,2,4 and 5. Turning books/comics into films isn't inherently bad. Personally I loved LOTR, SpiderMan, X-Men, and Harry Potter Its when they do a poor Job of it that it blows. LOTR. Peter Jackson got the studio buy off to do it right... and it worked. He did it right. True to the story to make it great. Too often... they want to change the story badly to appeal to a "Better" audience. Which in turn just makes a movie suck, cause that is not what the original had appeal for to begin with.

The problem, while I do not like the ruleling. That bolded line states exactly what the judges ruled. Fair compensation must be given. What is not stated is whom gets to declare what is fair compensation. In this, the Counties are given the authority to decide what is just.

Enforcing the law, does not mean you agree with it. What we should be yelling at is for congress to explicity state the law to what we all agree is just.

It has been a very useful piece of equipment for the scientific community and would continue to be so. True the cost looks big, but compared to the many other expenditures NASA Makes its a small price for the gain you get from it. Unless you can put up a new telescope with at least it's capabilities for the repair cost its worth the investment.

If you are using an Athlon XP, are you using a VIA Chipset? I was running Windows XP on my Athlon system and consistantly locked up when using some 3D Graphics programs like Battlefield 1942 and Unreal2003 while running just fine with Quake3.

The following site VIA-Problems.html has a link in its graphics section which was supposed to be incorporated into the VIA Driver but never seems to have been. After applying it, my system has worked fine since. As always use at your own risk.

Thus far, for me XP has worked better then I ever remember NT4... Though we use everything here at work.
Win XP, Win 2000, NT 4, Win 98, Red Hat (not sure what version the sysadmins are on) for various application support. The forced migration can be used as a good thing at times... Forcing people to find a better solution rather then leaving a rat's nest behind.

Well, as another here in South Bend, Indiana. I've had Comcast Cable formerly AT&T and outside of the switch over period when they where on @Home's network the Cable has been remarkably reliable. I've had 2-3 outages in approximately 2 years total. I've never had a problem with it running slow. Of course, that doesn't mean its good all over.

I've been more then happy with it though as when I show people whom use DSL around here they are impressed by its regular performance. DSL adoption though in this area has been quite slow though
