  8. Backwards compatibility will matter... on Next-Gen Xbox To Lack Backwards Compatibility? · · Score: 1

While it's true that people who have Xbox games will likely have an Xbox, how will Microsoft expect to gain any *new* converts if they don't at least offer backwards compatibility. I dropped out of the console wars when the 64bit systems started coming out, and only recently (a year ago) got back in. All of the consoles were the same price, with the Gamecube about 50 bucks cheaper (Canadian, eh!), so it came down to games. Even if the PS2 had come out at the exact same time as the Xbox and Gamecube, it still would have a huge library of games. At the time, all Xbox really had in it's future was Halo... at 70 bucks. Gamecube really didn't have games aimed at me, they were aiming at kids and at best, teens. PS2, on the other hand, had 20 dollar PS1 games, and 30 dollar PS2 games (Greatest Hits). Guess which one won out? PS2, hands down. Xbox 2 will have no chance at gaining me as a convert if it doesn't have backwards compatibility. I ain't waiting for a year for good games (good=fun). Buying an Xbox2 with no good games is like buying the BMW with no tires, gas, seats or windows.

Many of them you'll find in bargain bins or "previously enjoyed" at EB, Circuit City, Best Buy, Future Shop and so on. Many games from Strategy First are RTS, and vary in degree of difficulty. Chariots of War Cossacks Kohan Europa Universalis I & II Hearts of Iron Legion Man of War II Patrician II Victoria Waterloo Of course there is Shogun: Total War. Empire Earth is another suggestion as well. Sure, not many that are "conquer the entire world" rts games, but surely you can find some fun (and cheaply) in that selection.

  10. Like anything else on the internet... on Want To Play The Multiplayer FPS Games You Bought? · · Score: 2, Interesting

... if you can't find what you want, you have to create it yourself. If you can't find a "stock" server, then why not create one? Surely you can't be alone in wanting to play stock Half Life, or Quake ]|[, or Battlefield 1942. Get together a few like-minded individuals and rent a server somewhere. A quick google on "game server rental" brings up quite a few places to rent servers. If you have a good, fast connection to the internet, get a second computer and set up a dedicated server. If you aren't willing to host your own server, or pay someone to host one, there are still plenty (thousands) of game servers out there, there are ones that you will find fun.

  11. Re:Finding a balance on Want To Play The Multiplayer FPS Games You Bought? · · Score: 4, Interesting

If you're willing to pay $15 dollars a month to pay for an MMORPG, why not do the same to play a FPS? There are numerous places to rent servers and run game as you see fit. Get together a small group of friends, or form a clan, and a server rental will be a couple of dollars, each, a month.

Well, if we're not apathetic, how'd the Liberals get elected three times in a row, with majority governments? And, not to mention, all this time all I've heard is bitter complaints. :P I just wanted to point out a small error in his column, and that perhaps we in Canada don't seem to care about how the votes are counted. Three elections, and not one single voter who stayed behind to watch (in the three different locations I scruitineered)? Canada's system of government isn't without flaws though, an unelected Senate, and no way of choosing who the Prime Minster will be. In the last three Canadian Federal elections, I'll bet most people were voting for Liberals, wishing it was Jean Chretien at the helm.

  15. As a former scruitineer.... on E-Voting: a Flawed Solution in Search of a Problem · · Score: 5, Informative

Cringly has one small flaw in that, the scruitineers from each party do not count the ballots. The officials from Elections Canada do all the counting. The scruitineers are allowed only to observe the process, to ensure that there are no irregularities. In the three elections I scruitineered for, I did not witness any irregularities. And, in all three, no members of the public remained to watch the ballot counting. Voter apathy is probably as high or higher in Canada than in the US.

If I can't find it there, then I'll resort to newspapers, books, the library, encyclopedias, so on and so forth. The internet is just faster and more convenient, it's as biased and one-sided as anything else can be, so you have to always take things with a grain of salt, as the saying goes.

Seriously, I agree with the post above where people had nasty words for Word. I strongly dislike word processors, especially ones that do things automatically without asking or indicating what they're about to do, and can't be turned off. I don't know about everyone else, but whenever I make a typing mistake, my fingers have already backspaced over it and retyped the correct letters before my concious brain has fully caught on. So when MS Word changes "teh" to "the" without my telling it to... it pisses me off. :P It's a pity that so many of my business's clients use Word...

Any of the Sim games (not the Sims, but Sim Ant, Sim Tower, Sim City, etc...) for management and organizational skills.
