  1. The Spirit of the True Hacker on A Look Back at One of the Original Phreaks · · Score: 1

Kudos for the New York Times, that ol' Grey Lady, for publishing such a moving obit. I think we should all recognize the man's genius, that spark which inhabits all hackers: that love of intricate systems, which beckon us to explore hidden worlds, affect their behavior, prodding, probing, and extending ourselves, eventually injecting ourselves into the system. We modern techies take for granted such intimacy with today's technology: truly, Ma Bell was Joe's real mother. Whatever you're hacking, in whatever medium, whether electronic or mechanical, analog or digital, we can all gather inspiration from Joe's skills and accomplishments (and those of other phreakers "back in the day"). Joe, God bless and rest in peace.

  2. PREAIR Torrents in 2007 on TV Industry Using Piracy As A Measure Of Success · · Score: 1

Is this why there have been so many "PREAIR" torrents released this past Fall? I guess there's an incentive for producers to show earlier-than-airdate statistics to broadcasters as a way to convince them of the program's expected popularity. http://www.mininova.org/search/?search=PREAIR

  3. Re:Aiming accuracy... on Weapons of War Now Include Lightning Guns · · Score: 1

As your post seemingly evinces, the problem with the nonlethality of the weapon is that it makes the human operator more likely to deploy it aggressively. In the example of the aid station in Afghanistan, why can't the soldiers distributing aid use megaphones, warning shots, or any similar harmless method? Imagine how resentful the people you are trying to help will be if you shock the crap out of them every time they don't act the way you want them to. They may be thankful for the food, but you won't exactly be winning their hearts and minds, particularly if these weapons strike women and children. Nonlethal != Harmless. You still have to consider that you may be harming (mostly) innocent-- albeit panicked-- people. -J

  4. How about craigslist.org? on Rise of the Professional Blogger · · Score: 1

I find craigslist one of the few, truly altruistic web sites on the internet. I also like that Craig publishes his own blog. Wouldn't you agree that craigslist.org has succeeded (for the most part) in building and maintaining a popular community-focused website?

  6. The article misses some glaring points. on United Kingdom Leads the World in TV Downloads · · Score: 1

    (1) I read the article, which did not mention the huge amounts of money Hollywood makes releasing TV shows to DVD. Case in point: The Family Guy; the DVD release of season one was sooo popular, Fox is re-releasing it on the primetime schedule. A very rare case of the tail wagging the dog. Obviously, Bittorrent may put a huge den in home DVD revenue. (2) Perhaps the reason a substantially greater share of TV show downloads are done by Britons has to do with necessity or other marketplace factors. The show mentioned in the piece, "24", is an American show. American shows compose most of the Top 50 of TV show downloads. Perhaps they are not as prevalent on broadcast and cable TV in Britain and Australia as they are in America. Therefore, out of necessity, many Britons and other non-American, English speakers have resorted to downloading them. On a personal note, I am originally from the island of Guam, where "America's Day Begins!" and where the local cable company sucks ass! Firstly, we get our TV *one-week* behind schedule because the videotapes(VHS) are flown-in from San Francisco and played through the cable TV. Our cable TV company extorts money from the consumers without adequate government oversight, and their service is down so frequently that I cannot rely on them to "broadcast"(a very loose term in their case) an important TV event. One year even the Super Bowl broadcast almost did not air (because they had been using the US Gov't's Far East Network satellite feed without paying for it!) As I've given you ample anecdotal evidence, sometimes mainland America is so blessed, that the necessity to utilize an innovative solution just isn't there yet.

  9. Dear Steve Jobs: retire HFS+ for Chrissakes! on Apple Releases Mac OS X Patches · · Score: 2, Interesting

It looks like most of the Apache problems stem from Apple's own HFS+ filesystem and its lack of case-sensitive filenaming. HFS+ needs to be retired. I mean, what kind of *nix uses a default filesystem that is *not* case-sensitive? There's a myriad of worthy file systems out there (UFS being my personal favorite.) Before you Mac people flame me, I must point out that I am writing this on my iBook, which I treasure dearly.

I remember reading "Linux for Dummies" First Edition and not learning enough. Then, I picked up a wonderful little book that I found in a used bookstore entitled, "Think Unix!" which sparked a deep appreciation for Unix and Unix-like OS's. Through "Think Unix!" I came to understand the power, simplicity, and sophistication of the command line interface and also useful principles for managing a *nix system. In fact, while reading this book, I practiced on FreeBSD BEFORE I went on to Linux. Thank you, Jon Lasser!

  12. Two interfaces to connect to LAN and Internet? on Building a Budget Storage Server · · Score: 1

I may be reading the article wrong but I am getting the impression that the author intends to connect the server to both the internet ("behind a firewalled connection") and the LAN. Firstly, what business does a file server have on the Internet? Isn't that what VPNs are for? Secondly, even hot-swapping a network connection from internal to external and vice-versa can expose your Windows box to an exploit and then bring the exploit into the LAN (much less connecting the box to *both* networks simultaneously.) Naturally, the other problems w/ this system such as lack of redundant storage, lack of backup, dismissing the use of Linux as an OS offhand, huge cost, etc.
