PalmOS updates were far from nonexistent, but they weren't as easy to obtain as Android updates are through the free software development paths like Cyanogenmod.
I flashed my PalmOS devices many times. Only the last one with the Handspring name had an OS in unalterable ROM.
It's going to be hard to feel safe in a spacecraft until we have something like General Products hulls.

It won't be hard to learn OS X. The GUI is different from X windows (though X is bundled, for compatibility with other *nix flavors), but only under the hood. From a user perspective, a GUI is a GUI, with each one having aspects you may like or dislike.
There are ways to boot install media to run diagnostics or repair file systems. With OS X, it's a more limited choice of tools for that than you would have with Linux, but the mechanics are similar enough.
Once the OS is up and running, you can do anything *nix with it.
Say you have an iPod and a digital camera, both of which speak USB. Why not have a way to plug the two together (via gphoto2, for example) and dump the camera's contents to the iPod? Linux on an iPod could be useful for that when a desktop/laptop isn't handy.
If someting out there already does that, then I apologize for my ignorance on the topic.
So do the milk and beef producers collude to fix output? Without beef consumption, milk producers would have to slaughter the male offspring not used for breeding and dump the carcasses somewhere.
I had the pleasure of visiting at length with ESR at the last Worldcon (Chicon 2000, for those of you who missed it). He is one of the most polite and gentle people I have met. (And one of the most opinionated, who appears to have made clearly-thought and researched choices.)
I liked him.
I purchased an AC31600H (1.6 GB ATA) about four years ago. After about six months, it started having "knocking" symptoms. WD's standard response is, disconnect it from the cable. If the symptom stops, it's your problem.
No other disk drive in my possession ever manifested that symptom. When WDC issued an advisory about those disks, I requested a replacement. The replacement suffered the same symptom. I got them to replace it once more. They sent an AC21600H. It ALSO had the symptom. I gave the disk away and haven't looked back.
In my experience, WDC's best disk was the ST-238 (30MB RLL).
I will _never_ buy a WD disk drive again.
My Maxtor, Conner (before Seagate bought it), Quantum and Seagate disks perform flawlessly.
I have a Conner 420 purchased at least six years ago. It still runs fine as the Linux "/" drive of my wife's computer.
I will put more of my "disposable" income to paying off my debt instead of to buying toys. I will work toward becoming financially independent, so I don't have to work for other people's agendas.
Your lantern has gone out. It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

My Virgin Mobile phone's stock firmware has some hint of CarrierIQ software, but the checker tools on the Android Market say it's not running.

You'll be missed. I found Slashdot in 1997, as my low UID attests.
I was wont to make a U-turn along the way to Angkor Wat while seeking the Book of Ur.

The EQII trial links directly to a Windows executable. Why should I bother? If they won't support some *nix flavor, I'm less than interested.
Loud pipes damage my hearing when I have my windows down and they pass me. Change-rattling stereos do not.
Loud pipes annoy the neighbors.

Lest you forget, the human foot worked fine for millenia without shoes.
If you start anywhere other than there when proposing a solution, I'd suspect strongly you have a motive to sell something.
My partner keeps a copy of her doctor's order for the sleep study in the bag with her CPAP. So far it's never been a problem.
Run really big TCP windows.
Maps On Us is my favorite site, because of the addressbook and arbitrary number of intermediate stops features.
It's US-specific, though.

Was this perhaps a clone of the Tandy Model 16 or 6000? These machines used Z-80s for CP/M and TRS-DOS programs and the M68K for Unix.

No more WDC.
If you'd learn to walk barefoot, you wouldn't get torn feet on rocky surfaces. Millions, if not billions, of people worldwide get by just fine without shoes. You may, too. Visit http://di r.yahoo.com/Society_and_Culture/Cultures_and_Group s/Barefooters/ for more info.
I may give up television if NTSC goes away without a cost-effective alternative.
It's Your Money or Your Life, after all.
Harvesting power from shoes presumes that we want to wear shoes. If we instead go barefoot as much as possible, we
1) save energy and slave labor
2) gain much healthier feet
3) have an opportunity to challenge rampant prejudice
Perhaps that rotary magnet generator would work strapped to a leg?
