People can't function as well with these distracting devices. Your brain is wired to be be drawn to moving items like a scrolling image on the dash. It is not an AGE specific problem. Sure this may be upsetting like a reality show contestant finding out for the 1st time (on national TV) that they actually suck -- your brain isn't all you may believe it to be.
GPS makers may make a MODE for this; that is, until a law is written... won't be hard to have some studies to back it since the recommendation is well grounded in at least a basic understanding. I've done some reading in the area; go find a prof and ask.
The NHTSA not unreasonable; having learned to read maps I can manage without GPS and would be perfectly fine with a static ICON image moving on the map; the map itself refreshing no more than every 5 seconds.
Note: Speedometer changes constantly; but it is SMALL and consistent in motion--- a sliding changing surface is a larger more distracting item. One shouldn't misunderstand the reasons behind such recommendations.
Now the difference here is likely lower than the amount of accidents the old cause... but we can't recommend or remove driving rights from the largest voting block. Given how many distracted drivers almost KILLED me, I'm for anything that makes people DRIVE. I don't care about those people stupid enough to drive off a cliff because the GPS told them to... well, then I think the GPS is doing us a favor.
Sometimes you just have to take a RISK. People die, that is how life works. The war on nature has to stop. There are reasonable measures and then there is the extreme we go today on all fronts from heath to environment. We are an animal like all the others just too "smart" for our own good.
Will humans evolve? nope. not anymore. we put an end to that. Every sickly human has to live and procreate until we run out of resources. When I get seriously ill, I will just die as I am supposed to or kill myself. Funny how religious types will go against God's will and use every man-made means to prevent death for selfish reasons yet claim they are carrying out God's will...
Not really; a loan involves interest - something real. Paying dividends is similar to interest on a loan. If they have no dividends then sure they must raise PERCEPTION of value to have the stock price rise - but perception does not cost in real money like dividends do. Selling higher priced stock comes at the expense of the buyer who thinks it is worth it -- they can issue more shares and raise a lot of capital without having to pay back a penny to anybody; unless they have dividends which cost THEM directly.
I thought it would take a little longer before the wall street bean counters started destroying Apple. Wonder how quickly Google will shift into super villain when their leadership goes...
Maybe Jobs was building up to buy back a big stake in itself freeing it from so much control from the bean counters which nearly killed it previously. Bad times need cash reserves; use savings fund or issue shares - but to pay dividends, that makes it into a big loan with the risk of having to pay for the borrowed money (instead of the gamblers paying for it.)
I realize modern MBA religion is 150% against conservatively structured business models and running fully leveraged is the only option (management never suffers from such risky positions they put everybody else into.)
Productivity is not that important we are just brainwashed into thinking nothing matters more. France obviously had their productivity go down when they stopped their people from over working.
The all important productivity is going to replace jobs with robots and software AND cheap labor while putting a few people in charge of it so "Productivity" can go up. Meanwhile the population goes UP and there are not enough jobs to go around for everybody. How long are we going to blame the poor and unemployed for their predicament.
Doctors and nurses are still resisting checklists! SIMPLE CHECKLISTS!!? a proven method to drastically cut down errors to which there is no decent counter argument but here we are STILL - no checklists.
You think the human ego will not drastically hold back progress more than the other humans contribute towards progress? I don't.
Health for profit is not ultimately beneficial; it could be removed and replaced with something better but the culture is so brainwashed we'll continue down in the wrong direction -- we are already to the point where patents are harming scientific progress and corporate grants to research institutions influence the work being done. (I knew a few people, they wasted a lot of time twisting words to trick people into funding their real research and doing the minimum to appease the corporatist bent interests.)
Who needs STEM? We can make our livings promoting corporate agendas by rephrasing talking points to every online forum as well as dumb down any discussion to lower the chances people figure out what is really going on.
The system does not work and has slowly gotten worse for so long that many people do not realize that it has been getting worse (see frog boiling.)
"Justice" has little meaning to people anymore; not that it likely had much to begin with. Today it is all about punishment and "correction" is just a euphemism - we don't abuse the prisoners like we used to do but the attitude has not changed, it just became more "humane" (except solitary which can be worse than torture.) We promote the idea of sexual abuse in prison and in some places it might be encouraged so unofficially crewel punishment is desired.
A punishment based system will always fail. Biggest reason is that a complex intricate problem does not have single simplistic solutions; Americans are culturally biased towards overly simplified answers beyond the human nature to also gravitate toward them.
Nutcases. They do not belong in prison but most go there. Thank Reagan for making that go further backwards. Pedophiles are another kind of crazy. They will always repeat, because they are crazy!
Drug use crimes warp the entire system and the other drug related crimes do not help either. A big problem is the idiotic war on drugs; I find it interesting that in less than 100 years we repeat the same mistakes, including bank deregulation... how not to get out of a depression...
Problem is ignorant people make bad decisions about things they know nothing about. Politicians generally know nothing of what they talk about and sell people on things they know nothing about.
Everybody seems to think they are a dentist because they had fillings. Education should be the same way and in addition the education experts vastly more difficult profession than some mouth mechanic.
If you want to fix education in the USA the 1st thing you can do is remove political involvement in "fixing" the system. That will not happen because Americans love to shift responsibility from the top on down to the citizens themselves, especially the parents-- their brats can do no wrong and nothing is their parenting! I know teachers, the previous generation was a lot closer to "how hard should I hit my child for misbehaving?" and the next generation was "my little johnny says you are a bad teacher, why can't you teach him?". As the USA goes down the drain even more desperation and blame shifting will happen along with more panic.
Another factor is that the USA thinks it is on the top of the world and their limited world view is WAY behind reality and its not surprising since the general perceptions are about a generation behind. The world education rates have gone up worldwide by huge amounts with many nations on par with the USA that were previously way behind. There is a LIMIT to what can be achieved (and measured) so as everybody progresses the gap between the top and majority gets smaller-- the benefits of being ahead become smaller-- even if your nation is at the TOP the whole time the difference becomes negligible so who is on top then no longer matters as it once did. The great benefits of education the USA had is being minimized as others continue to progress forward; therefore, to some degree a relative judgement error is highly likely.
Plus there is the misconception that education == job. There is a job problem and it will be getting worse people are looking for scapegoats and excuses and education is going to be put under more pressure to be a simple job training program; career is not important if you just need a job and there are not enough to go around.
The legal definition. I have incorporated before with just myself so its not technically a group of people. Its a legal entity exists solely at the government's whim and did not exist as it does today prior to the civil war.
you undo yourself in your own posting with: "or of the press" when quoting from the 1st. CBS News is press.
Corporations do not have human rights. I'm shocked at how difficult my post was for Anonymous Cowards to handle. People in a group are not the same as a legal entity created by a small group of people.
We have an international corporation problem becoming bigger each year and I think there is some connection of that with both people's feelings towards established institutions being influenced as well as propaganda which leverages science or pseudo science.
For example, anti-global warming propaganda harms the credibility of all science. Corporations like Monsanto convince us that their science makes nature better and science knows everything - there are no risks to our DNA hacking... Governments prohibiting "alternatives" known to work, like Stevia or weed while promoting commercialized lesser products like THC drugs with side effects. Unavailability of cheap generic solutions etc... hell, the corps world wide are trying to OWN potable water!
Expectation of performance. Science to many people seems to be to be viewed as a form of religion. We didn't get our flying cars by 2000 as was promised in 1950. We didn't get a 30 hour work week thanks to technology either! We are not living on the moon. The pill might be much better and safer than the herb it replaced and it may even be cheaper but the expectations could be HIGHER than that of the herb. The fault is not so much in science or even the futurists (who must share some blame) but the "corporation" or well, the advertizing hype industries and politicians created. We have millions of people; some who should know better, believing science will find a way to solve ALL problems, even the impossible ones like many exponential growth curves at the root of most of today's big problems. It is an easy way to tune out and just leave problems in science's hands... the anti-science ones would do the same but they leave the problems in god's hands. Disillusioned believers may lash out against god or science; but science lacks the level of institutional and traditional to help appease the disillusioned and bring them back in the fold.
Our democratic systems for representation have been hacked and functionally do not operate under our control. It is quite an effective hybrid in that it provides enough of a feedback loop and massive distractions to keep the public powerless in most areas that matter. Social issues are great for letting the people "eat cake" and appease them - just how far this will go we will find out since history shows ALL such systems fall to despotism. This is likely due to the corrupting influence of power causing gradual overreach until despotism. Only in history is it written to have sudden changes by specific events; it is usually more gradual with more events, people just like to cling onto some symbolic turning point.
The problem with "modern" democratic system design is that civil revolutions attempt to replace actual revolutions and while that is a noble goal, it creates a revolution process which the corrupt ruling class has the most control over and in advance before any movement even forms. Sure, violence is not good but one aspect to avoiding anarchy is greatly limiting the agility and unpredictability of popular movements thereby making the number of people involved far less important than money, power, and influence -- which the ruling class likely has (almost always the motives of a revolt.) The news is extremely critical and this was recognized by modern systems but here we are today again with a censored press - but this time it evolved beyond simplistic censorship.
I've said the public wasn't "smart" enough for over a decade; but it was always along the lines that MODERN SOCIAL SCIENCE has surpassed the majority's "intelligence" - not exactly about being "smart" because propaganda and life-long indoctrination by cultural engineering can sucker anybody if properly done. Few people can think outside the box in which they've lived, especially in a society which prides itself on individualism making them less capable of recognition of their own herd mentality. Pride is a really powerful method for thought control; it goes hand in hand with cognitive dissonance. Besides, a distracted and/or uninterested smart person can be act stupid - we have an escapist and A.D.D. culture way beyond the imagination of Roman spectator "sports". Our propaganda (aka "P.R.") is based upon the same stuff Hitler used and has passively evolved as well as benefited greatly by advances in the social sciences.
Chemistry seemed dangerous because of gas (poison or rapid expansion.) Physics seemed dangerous because of nukes. Biology because of its chaotic and unknown nature; a greater threat today because of advances. For a century, the "soft" sciences have been the most powerful and deadly of all sciences.
Parent is not worth his salt (historical reference to an ancient monetary system.)

Corporations are not people. Corporations are government created legal entities without any rights other that which government gives them (and shouldn't be allowed to do anything beyond the power of government since that is an obvious backdoor.)

The KKK as long as they do not incorporate can do what they want-- but if they incorporate then they should be required to allow black membership. Oh that one could be interesting...
SELinux has a history with the NSA; it's known. anything Linux related will leverage that history. Actually, I thought that MS complained and used their corrupt influence to cut down on the governments contributions to linux.
I was reading a shareholder report LAST year talking about gas being planned to hit $5 this summer (next year) and you don't think they won't AIM for that price even if they do not need to do so?? Remember that the last time it spiked Exon made record profits while the world economy tanked and their excuse was that there wasn't enough oil... they just used an excuse to jack up prices; if it was legitimate then they would have made the SAME profit while prices spiked but instead they made the RECORD of all profits in history!
Iran does not have a whole lot to do with it now; there is always some excuse to jack up prices and game the gullible public, officials as well as bribe the other officials.
Approximately 70 cents per gallon is going to the trading markets who claim to be "stabilizing" the market and we all fall for that crap too...
I've been saying $5 since last year because I knew somehow they'd find a reason to do it again because it was planned for in advance.
Obama came in after a HUGE dip in demand after a crash and after they ran off with our money. They jack up prices, make a killing then lower them to keep us from doing anything then wait until they can do it again. It was at an unusually low price for a short period when he came in, for most of the bush years I payed more and I'm in one of the lowest priced places in the nation.
The USA does not represent you or your nation and for the informed they know the USA does not represent its own citizens either. SOPA and ACTA will eventually happen somehow as soon as the public drops the ball long enough on the issue for them to sneak it bye; with or without the UN. At least with the UN it will have even more BS to navigate and given how weak the UN is it will probably not have the impact the USA is today messing with people's domains, pushing around foreign officials like puppets etc.
There is more going on than just the DNS mess with ICANN. I'm 110% for moving away from ICANN but it is all the other internet issues which will be tied to this simple move that I am worried about.
China already has the firewall the USA will be getting. ICANN is not stopping China any.
Progress is not worth having to read about or even mildly support if there are flawed people with shared interests fighting on my side.
My business should fail and we should be laid off because 1 of my coworkers is a jerk; that is only fair! Why should I work to prop up a business which employs a jerk even if it costs me my job? I have to set the threshold somewhere... so it might as well be at ZERO.;-)
End uses of propane, natural gas, and biogas are largely similar. Sheesh!
In many situations they are interchangeable with some minor adjustments. For example, I have a NG furnace which runs on propane when I switched the regulator and nozzles. A small engine only would need a pressure switch to flip gasses, the tank would likely differ; but you swap propane tanks anyway.
I would love to have an easy way to refill a tank with NG to use on a small engine device instead of swapping a propane tank. It likely would be cheaper for people with a gas line; while people without one are still probably better with propane; devices that can handle BOTH would be ideal and not impossible. Propane is used instead of natural gas because of the differences in storage and transport; a cheap natural gas solution would require a much larger tank but if your needs are lower and you can refill at home then the NG solution should be cheaper than the propane one.
Propane cars are better. burn cleaner, last longer, fewer oil changes, burn the fuel better too. Less horrible chemicals in the exhaust. Long term storage. Natural gas is difficult to store but propane is not. Somewhere I heard gasoline takes more refinement.
Pressure regulator decides on the gas so it can be easy to put in mixes or other gases if you adjust the pressure accordingly. I know a guy who regularly switched between LP and biogas. Conversions cost around a few grand today. Sometimes propane was cheaper than gasoline.
The BEST application for this and self-refueling is to replace snow blowers, lawn mowers, generators, and small tractors with natural gas or propane; especially for storage over long periods of time since gasoline "spoils". A lawn mower engine without regulations pollutes and wastes more gas than your car as for a long time. It probably takes 100s of miles in a car to equate with 1 lawn cutting. We have enough gas to power these small wasteful devices and they will run BETTER longer with less troubles as a result! forget about a mass migration to cars.

Performance beats out gas in some cases, check out http://www.gotpropane.com./
