  1. Radio Shack still exists? on RadioShack CEO Resigns · · Score: 1

I was looking for one a few months back here where I live in Canada, and saw that all Radio Shack stores in the malls are now 'The Source by Circuit City." Exact same store though, just with a different sign.

I wonder if they or someone else will release Mac binaries finally?

Yes, I know you can install GnuCash using Fink, as that's what I do currently. But it would be so much more convenient to be able to download a standalone GnuCash.app like you can with Gimp, Frozen Bubble, OpenOffice, AbiWord, and others.

Maybe it's neither a tablet nor a new iPod that these patents are for (disclaimer: I didn't look at any of the patents). There have also been rumors about Apple cell phones, so perhaps these go hand in hand and Apple's making their version of the Blackberry?

  5. Who cares? on Super Bowl Footballs Get The DNA Touch · · Score: 3, Insightful

If someone's stupid enough to pay thousands of dollars to buy a football just because it was supposedly used in a Superbowl game, then they deserve it if they get conned.

Similarly, I don't get all these auctions where an article of clothing sells for huge sums of money simply because a celebrity wore it once. Why's it suddenly worth so much more than getting the exact same thing from a store?

  6. Misleading article subject line... on AOL to Charge Senders for Incoming Email · · Score: 3, Insightful

I just read the article, and I don't think the title of this posting should be "AOL to charge senders for incoming mail" but "AOL to charge senders to ensure email don't get flagged as spam."

From the looks of it, I could still send an email to a friend with an AOL address and not get charged for it. However... any any images linked to would be blocked, and links within the email would be 'non-clickable' unless you sign up for AOL's program. And the poster makes it sound like it's an expensive deal - the article mentions several times that the fee is "a fraction of a cent per email." Doesn't mention whether or not there's a hefty signup fee or not...

    Didn't RTFA, I assume?

The article's about people having critical and/or sensitive files on their USB drive, and then losing it. As such, the files are lost as well. TFA is not about copying/stolen/pirated files.

  10. Since 3/4 of you aren't going to RTFA... on When Data Goes Missing Will You Even Know? · · Score: 3, Informative

From reading the comments, it's obvious that most of the posters haven't RTFAed. But what's new - this is Slashdot after all...

So to clue you all in:

The article is not about people stealing sensitive data from their workplace using their USB drives. The article is about people losing data, because they've lost the USB drive they had it stored on.

  11. No, most of the posters here are confused. on When Data Goes Missing Will You Even Know? · · Score: 1

  13. Re-enabling "2 more..."? on Slashdot Index Code Update · · Score: 1

So, how do I go about re-enabling the "x more..." display? I like the idea of having all the articles from a section display on the main page, but I promptly turned off the (IMO) ugly and distracting 'abbreviated sectional article summaries' for all other sections - but I would still like the bar on the left to tell me that there's something new there.

And while I'm thinking about it, how about, using cookies perhaps, making that number reflect the number of new articles in that section since I last read it, rather than whatever arbitrary time period was being used previously?

  15. Re:Are /.ers freeloaders? on Should Apple make .Mac free? · · Score: 1

The problem is that many features in the iLife apps and OSX itself are tied to .Mac. For example, you couldn't use iPhoto's Photocasting function to upload your photos to whatever web hosting service you may already use. (I could be wrong... Jobs didn't say anything to imply that it would work with anything other than .Mac)

So you've just slapped down $x for some software, but you need to spend an additional $y to unlock all the features. So they should at least offer a more limited version of .Mac, with lower bandwidth and storage space for example, for free for an unlimited time.

Now if stuff like Photocasting was being billed as a .Mac feature, that added or unlocked additional functionality to iPhoto, that would be different than the way it is now - iPhoto has this feature, but it's useless without .Mac.

  16. Flip4Mac is buggy! on Microsoft Ends Windows Media Player on the Mac · · Score: 1

I downloaded and installed Flip4Mac a couple days ago when I first found out about it, and am not entirely pleased. I'd rather use WMP.

(as an aside, I don't know what everyone's complaining about? I haven't had any problems with WMP for Mac. Yes, there's less features than WMP for Windows, but that's what iTunes is for. I just need something that'll play WMV fles.)

With every video I've tried playing, whenever I close the video window after it's done playing, I always get a "Quicktime has quit unexpectedly. Would you like to reopen it?" message (can't remember the exact wording, but it's the usual message you get when an app has crashed).

And then I can't use Quicktime's "Export to iPod" option for playing on my iPod... I assume that's not a bug but rather they want me to pay extra to unlock that ability (yes, I do already have Quicktime Pro). Can anyone recommend a free WMV converter for OSX?
