I think the concept at work here is that art is now becoming more self-referential(sp?). Since the early 20th century we've begun to see more art that is inspired by and about the medium in which it is delivered. We see more sound installations that are about sound delivery methods, more video installations about the video medium itself. A lot of art being produced today addresses the difference between 'data' and 'information'. I think (hope) this is the point Katz is trying to argue, and I would agree

IMHO, Art today isn't about looking at things through the techno-diety lens. Art is about (wo)mankind's relationship with its environment. Today it's nigh impossible to avoid technology in some form. Therefore, technology is an integral part of one's environment, and it stands to reason that the art produced from within this environment would reflect said technology.

You sir are delusioned. It's not your responsiblity to 'bring him out of his delusion of grandeur'. Because 'you' cannot do this. This is not what Jesus meant when he said, 'Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth'. Jesus said this as an admonition to be 'meek' before God himself. God doesn't want you to die at the hands of some desperate idiot whom is beyond the point of rationality. How much are you going to do for his cause when you're dead because you said, "Let's have a cup of tea" when someone's pointing a gun to your head. I'm sorry, but if someone's willing to kill you for a few bucks in consumer goods, then he's most likely past the point of reason, or religion.

I'm sick of people like you giving Christians a bad name. "This is what Jesus meant...". You pompous bastard. "War is not necessary for self defense", I wish you could say this to my grandfather's face. He was at Pearl Harbor. I don't think that he'd agree with you. I don't think that you'd say this if you knew what the Japanese did in Mongolia during WWII.

"When enough of us who are comitted to non-violence... are killed for our beliefs..." This confirms your idiocy. There's always more than two choices in a situation. It's not 'kill or be killed' it's 'how important is this shit to me?'. I think you need to take you New Age, "Angels are watching over me" crap to a different forum. While I agree to a certain extent with ideas already posted on this, (Selection of candidates due to political/regional affiliation) I still believe that this is a great idea. Yes, we still have so much we can learn from sending machines to Mars; but what could we learn from sending a human? What more could we learn by sending a human being, with our capacity for intuitive thought (and ability to get ourselves in/out of the worst situations)? What might one of us see that would fill in a proportionally larger piece of the puzzle?
I've felt for a while that the adventurous inclination in the "Human Spirit" had begun to atrophy, there just hasn't seemed to be undertakings with the sense of purpose and adventure that the early space program seems to have had (I'm a little young to remember). I'm not saying that there isn't, I'm sure people are putting their lives on the line for science/knowledge everyday, I just don't get to hear about them. I hate to use the cliche, but what other endeavors are as representative of the spirit of the "Wild West" and the push to find a place of one's own? Sure, we can sit here on this rock and ponder the nature of the universe (I do it myself), or we can put our money where our proverbial mouth is.
I do wonder however, why not the moon? Is there nothing more we can learn from it? Why not turn it into real estate?

"Brave New World". As much as this article implies a future similar to the one portrayed in the movie "Gattaca"; I think, with the increasing control that the governments of the world are exerting over the general populous, that a future more akin to Aldus Huxley's vision of factories churning out humans is more likely. How unlikely is it for governments to outlaw the natural process of procreation and create a society where they can control who and how many citizens are scientists and how many are garbagemen, with each perfectly suited to their "occupation". Move the (I apologize for the term) "indigenous" peoples again to reservations and let them have their "traditional" lifestyles and let the "first world" move ahead unencumbered. I think that Gattaca would be a utopian option. At least there people still have some degree of choice and the freedom to innovate and create. The "Brave New World" I think is much more likely and much more horrorfying.
