What's useful is the post near the end of the comments which explains how you can set up CUPS to do the same thing. The trick is using mplayer (I can think of better tools though) as a printer transport. Nice screenshots of the CUPS queue webpage with the songs sitting in it.

I'm wondering if you can get CUPS to alter the "doucment name" displayed in the queue, using mpgtools to fetch song info or something.

  6. Then MySQL should reclassify itself. on SAP and MySQL Join Forces · · Score: 2, Insightful

There should be different classes of DBs for different purposes. You have Sleepy Cat's BerkelyDB which, from a RDBMS standpoint, is incredibly crippled, yet is uber-fast, requires little resources, and is iron-clad.

You have MySQL which is like BerkeleyDB but with more sugar, with a network-centric view, and meta-data. But it does not skimp on speed for features or safety.

I don't know if Microsoft Access is in the first class or second, I'd have to say first.

Then you have the true RDBMS, MSSQL, Oracle, DB2, and Postgres.
There is another class, object oriented databases (Versant, Intersystems Cache, ozone).

MySQL should revel in the fact that it is NOT a true RDBMS and often that isn't needed for many applications that are forced onto RDBMSs unnecessarily. A partner ship with SAP will not help, and I think it may raise the bar of expectations to high for MySQL. I just hope it's as fast and easy to deploy in the end.

forget the fact that michael posted the article. It's rather an important thing to know considering how many slashdotters are responsible for one LAMP or another. MySQL being the 'M' in LAMP, you have to ask yourself: is MySQL going to kick ass through this partnership or what?

But I did like how you transformed the BSD troll (if that really is your doing), very original if so, and quite entertaining none-the-less. Still, I think this wasn't the right article to post it under.

Off all the things that could come out of the Hack-A-Thon, that one has to be the most evil hack of all. Now the question is, do they get the printer to somehow send the mp3 to a device capable of playing it with postscript or do they use a filter to detect and play the MP3, specifying /dev/audio as the printer device (for locking purposes)... either way... hehehe.

and CaseLogic 3-ring CD storage pages (fits 8 CDs or 4 CDs and 4 booklets per page)

Make sure to get a binder that's at least 2" thick if you have 10 or more pages because your pages will otherwise be impossible to turn (CDs are suprisingly thick when stacked).

Also, get yourself some cheap dessicant and store it with your binder if you're not carrying it around. If you can score the small packets (get 'em from shipping/packing suppliers) you could even tape them inside the binder. Haven't tried it myself, though.

He alluded that Sony tried to register the name "Shock and Awe" with the USPTO just after we withdrew, and then decided against it. I thought Sony was in the process of registering it already?

Anyway, the idea of a video game that involves practicioners of political science to implement their policy in a virtual world does sound interesting. But it remains to be seen how valid such a (relatively) simple model can be used to predict something so complex.

I want to see that sort of idea tried on a smaller scale. For example, residential planning, college boards, business deals, etc. Of course, the starting point will be "studies" staged by shrinks, think tank eggheads, pol. sci and comp. sci graduate students, where they get undergrads to brainstorm ideas to solve problems around campus using a virtual forum/interface. Then the let the thing chug and present the outcome to see how the kids react. Then maybe they let them implement one of the proposed solutions to the "problem" (which may not even be real...) and see how it plays out in comparison.

If that shows promise, excellent. But why bring in the game developers now? He doesn't seem to address that. In fact the article sort of drifts off into talking about upcoming games about Iraq.

Yawn indeed (oooh, Hollywood and video game designers look to real life for inspiration, how novel!) ::blink::
