  1. Re:If this is accurate... on China Accelerates Mars Program · · Score: 2, Insightful

It was still the competition with USSR that was the catalyst for our moon program. If we did not have that competition we probably would have never gone. Now with competition with China, that could help jump-start the program again which IMO is a good thing.

They probably do not care right now since it is mostly talk. When China starts sending men into space and especially if they start sending probes to Mars, people will start to take notice. The first time around it was Gagarin that really made everybody sit up and take notice. It is very possible that a major China mission could have the time type of effect especially if it looks like they are going to do something the US has not yet done. That is when the American people will care.

  3. Re:Wireless = Bad on VoIP, WiFi and the Future of Traditional Telecom · · Score: 2, Informative

I have not seen any of the issues you describe on a wireless network and I have one run for many years and VoIP runs just fine over a properly configured 802.11b network. The main interference problem I have seen have been cordless phones that operate on 2.5GHz because those are on the same frequency. Other then that, a properly configured and engineered wireless network works very well.

  7. Why not tell? on SCO Drops Linux, Says Current Vendors May Be Liable · · Score: 1

If there is really an IP problem in Linux, why won't SCO say what it is? Is litigation that important to them or do they not think they have a strong case so they want to do the PR thing for a while first so that when they finally announce what the problem is it will be backpage news. That way, even if it is just a minor issue, they have all this huge PR ahead of time so that nobody will care what the truth is. Come on, SCO. If there is a problem announce what it is. If there isn't a problem, stop this BS.

  8. Firewall policy on Using Firewalls to Block Spyware? · · Score: 5, Informative

A firewall should be configured to deny everything and only allow through what is needed. Only open ports that you need to open. Stuff like pop-ups that run on port 80 (which you need to open for at least your squid proxy) are a different matter As for blocking pop-ups and stuff like that, those are best done on the proxy server. On my proxy, I block all ad related sites (doubleclick, etc) and it is real easy to do with squid. The downside is that on some sites (like cnn) you get java errors on some of their java code. Just tell the users to say "no" to the "do you want to execute more java code from this page" and it is fine. That is the configuration I use and it works fine.

No it isn't all about piracy. They do not want the console used for anything but games (and bought games). That is why when people did get Linux to run on the X-Box, Microsoft made a change to it in the next manufactering run so that Linux would no longer run (though I think it took the hackers less then a day to get around it).

  12. Re:Info on Nintendo and Sony taking losses? on Xbox Hacking Book Prepares to Fly Off Shelves · · Score: 1

Just because the retail store is taking a loss when they sell the product does not mean that the company is. Actually, I have heard that Sony has not ever lost money on the PS2 hardware though I have found no links to back this up either. So unless the companies let us know, all we do is guess.
