Bravo! Mod parent up! JungleDisk is perfect! Finally, a online storage that's actually reasonably priced, with an open source front end. The client is definitely still in beta however. At least on Mac OS X 10.4 I have already found at least one bug. But, it does work. In fact it works so well I'm busily uploading 50GB of important data. I estimate it will only cost me around 7 or 8 dollars a month to backup 50GB off site. That's a steal. Sure, a nice dedicated NAS in the closet is faster (my current setup, old linux box stuffed with old hard drives), but what happens if the house burns down? This is off site. I couldn't be happier. Thanx for the tip, you made my day.
To get around the problem you had, I created a new group. I call it "share". You can use NetInfo Manager to create a new group. I then give share full control of the entire iTunes directory, and I add both my wife and my accounts to share, and all is well. I also did a similar thing with iPhoto. My problem was disk space. On a PowerBook, hard drive space is precious. I didn't want to have two copies of the same file. Especially when our music collection is over 15Gigs. That's allot of duplication. The only problem I have found with this setup is fast user switching. If I have iTunes open, and my wife switches to her account and tries to open iTunes, it will say the database is locked, and won't let her open it. I hope this helps.
You have made a very valid and excellent point. One of my favorite things about computers are their ability to archive a huge number of things. I keep everything I have ever written archived on my computer. On occasion I want to go back and retrieve something. If you saved everything in MS Word, who's to say you will still be able to open it 20 years from now? At least if it's in XML and the specs are published, I know I can get back to my data without an big problems.
Ok, you do have a point there. Most people who buy a Mac could afford MS Office. But here's my question, do you want to use MS Office? And this is my point. I us a Mac (I'm on my 12" PB right now) because I DO NOT want anything from Microsoft! I personally intend to give what I can (I'm poor after all) to help support the KOffice team. I really appreciate the hard work they guys and gals have done to make this happen. In the Mac world a native non MS full featured office suite is huge.
Ya, you guessed it, that's just what I do. I have a 20 foot VGA cable that I snake around the corner to my monitor. I control both via a KVM switch and a wireless keyboard and mouse. So, it works, just not all the gracefully. What I would like to do is get a cheap old 10 inch or so LCD to put in the closet with the servers. Between that and the wireless keyboard I wouldn't have to run any cables. Even better yet would be a KVM over IP switch. However I'm poor and don't have the 200+ dollars to fix a problem I already have a solution for. Oh well, life goes on. Anyone have any better ideas?
That's exactly what I did. I got the quietist bathroom fan I could afford, and an old electric base board thermostat. I took the thermostat and inverted the temperature element so it would come on when it got hot instead of cold. After a little fiddling with the setting I got it to come on at about 90 degrees Fahrenheit. On average the fan only runs about 10 minutes every hour, and keeps the closet temperature just fine. Total cost, about $65 US (not including the tools I already had). The only downside I can find to the set up is administrating the two servers in the closet. Most of the time I can ssh into either box, but if something goes wrong and I have to hook up a monitor it's a real pain. Other than that it's great.
Damn, that's sad. Your right. Maybe not 'cool' but Microsoft is on Slashdot every day. I guess we just love to hate Microshaft. It's almost like a past time for us. Dare I say a religion? OOohh look shinny!....... (we're so easily distracted)
This really is a great thing Baltimore is doing. I often have long lay overs at Baltimore Airport on my way over seas, and I always take the train down town and check out the water front. I wasn't planning on doing this next trip, because I have already seen it all. However, if they start offering free internet, I'll be back at the water front on my next lay over. Killing time on a park bench with my Powerbook. But what will also happen is that I will end up spending my money while I'm there. Will this have a great effect? Probably not. But kudos to any city who will embrace new technology.
Hey! That's not funny, after reading that I looked at ALL the posts above, and non of them mention a warez site! What a let down... And I was so excited to finnaly find a copy of Panther. Oh well...
Oh, I forgot to add, MS's new 64-bit OS's run on Intel's Itanium chips, so no, I don't think you can run a 64-bit OS on a 32-bit CPU, that just doesn't make any sense.
OK, I'll let you all know right up front, I don't know what I'm talking about, but you got me thinking, NT is 64-bit? WTF? So I did a little googleing, and the only references I can find to Microshaft and 64-bit OS are concerning there new Server 2003 and XP special 64-bit versions. 64-bit Windows Now, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think NT was 64-bit.
Ok, this whole frenzy over WWDC has been a blast. But this tops all, I just took a look at apple's online store (slowwww). The graphic that was accidently leaked of the G5 specs is the only image now that is not updated! HA! It just seems way to funny to me, the whole page is G5, except for that one graphic. Someone's having fun.. hahahaha...
Ok, so this is a bit off-topic, but the idea of selling a book by chapter is great! I've never thought of it that way, but I would love to buy just the first chapter or two, and If I liked it, buy the rest. Too often I read the back cover of a book, and decide it looks interesting, only to go home and find out the book is not that interesting at all. However, I just spent good money on this book, and I feel obligated to read it now. Why has no one thought of this idea of selling books by the chapter? It's a great Idea!
I do believe these two comments (Bethanie and Dyolf) are the most insightful and intelectual posts I have yet to come accross on Slashdot. There is a lot of bitching on Slashdot, and it tends to get a little iritating. Its nice to know there are still a few who take the time think before they type. Bravo, you both just made a new friend.
Ahbe
Ok, Just for the record I am a happily married straight male. As I was browsing through the posts, most of them sound like a bunch of sex crazed 16 year old boys. Ok, this might be a long shot, but are there any girls who read slashdot? Ok stop laughting, I'm serious. I would like to know what the ladies of slashdot think of this Aimee Deep girl. Once you take away the tits, whats left?
Ok, here's my question. Why does everyone spend so much time comparing PPC to x86? Ok, so I'm a recent switcher, I purchased a 12' PB. I love it. So it only has a 867 MHz G4, its way fast enough for 90% of what I do with it. So I hear this new PPC 970 is on its way. GREAT! Anything faster then what I have now is better. Right? I have a mac, I'm not trying to run Windows on it. If OS X and the software I run on it work fine, then I'm happy. All I'm getting at is that faster processors for Apple is a good thing. Just because they are not as fast as the x86 flavor doesn't bother me.
Your in luck, check out the icekey keyboard. http://www.macally.com/spec/usb/input_device/iceke y.html

Actually, it's very easy to share a single iTunes library between users. Look here: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20020 32411075244&query=share+itunes+between+users

Um.. Just wondering, if your "no fan of Apple by any menas of the imagination," why are you posting on apple.slashdot.org? Why even take the time?
