Well, it was a joke, but since you've raised a point about it...
I would conjecture alot of what has happened in the US has been based on FCC issues, and the whole fact of the matter that Cable companies are essentially the only legal monopolies left - which I know someone out there will disagree with.
For the sake of argument, agree. Now, what is the population density in the US? South Korea? What are the percentages of populations in Urban Centers.
According to a recent Slashdot article, 800MB of data were produced last year per person. How many GBs will be produced per person within the next ten years. Suppose Moore's *rule* holds for data creation also: it will double about 7 times. 800*2^7 - that is alot of data.. 102.400GB per person. Asside from that rather large number, how much do you download on a daily basis? Given the success of iTunes, how long will it be before we are using the iVids movie service (sorry, movielink doesn't count, since it sucks)? Suppose the average joe downloads a movie a week, at full DVD quality (which it better be). there's 5-9GB right there. What about networked data storage, which is no doubt the next step in computing. (look at NFS mounts now, roaming profiles, terminal services, portable homedirs..) Asside from everything everyone is creating with phones, DV cams and the like.
Is it really that far off to expect the end of 100baseT is coming? heck, 1000baseT is already here (although a bit of a misnomer if you ask me).
Best Buy is a multi-BILLION dollar company. I'm not sure they can keep every employee in line... it's like the 10,000,000 employees of McDonald's has, can they really prvent them from stealing a fry or two everyonce in awhile...
DMCA is not the best approach for Best Buy, or anybody else, but there is a serious problem with people posting prices ahead of time...
1) it's private information, probablyy under some kind of NDA. 2) the "leaked" ads can cause people to go and buy the stuff ahead of time, which counters the intended effect of the ad. Furthermore, it screws customers that weren't privy to the extra info. 3) it screws the company on the "best price" strategy, since other companies can market the same price.
this really screws up some of the economics of "draw" products, I think ethically, people should be bound to protect it.
a) the Parent is not a troll, before moderating, understand WHAT THE HELL EACH THING MEANS.
b) Stanley Kubrick: you love him or you hate him... Take AI, if you love Stanley, the movie is great, and on scale with the rest of his movies, if you don't like Stanley, you wonder how Spielburg could have made such a "bad movie" hahahaha
I think you've missed the point of the post. THE POINT, was that nationality on many levels is a GOOD thing. Yes, there are issues with some of the things the US has done through policy and action. But, this is MY country and I defend it, right and wrong. Incidentally, I only own ONE computer - but that is beside THE POINT.
To the moderator.. TROLL? Come on. This was a counter point to another person's post, hardly a troll. Offtopic, and Flamebait like I said, but not a troll.
PLEASE, Anonymous Coward! Stop your crap about US not doing enough. We need to serve OUR interests. Not everyone can have the same level of luxury as the US, it's just a simple fact, get over it, move on, stop trying to make me feel guilty for owning a nice fuel-guzzling vehicle while I drive though an all-night fast food joint to get a 1/4 pounder which I will throw away half of. I'll leave 4 computers on, running couterstrike servers, and httpd. I don't hate the HOLLYWOOD because they promote GASP! American Ideology, after all, they were made in AMERICA. But wait, isn't it HOLLYWOOD that is ANTI-WAR? perverse. All I can say is your "shame" is nice and all, but grow up, realize we can't all just get along, that communism failed a long time ago. I don't hate Indians, Jews, or White Americans. I just don't want to hear about which group is getting she shaft this week, I don't want to spend the rest of my life redistributing the money I EARN to the under-served NON-CITIZEN group of the week. You want our help, we'll annex you. Thanks for the land and the resources, here's your tax structure. Sorry, this is not only offtopic, it's also flame-bait, but it "needed to be said."
saying "PC" is akin to saying "IBM Compatible"... strangely enough, there haven't been many "PC" CPUs by IBM recently... ON THE OTHER HAND.... Apple has been using IBM chips for awhile now.. NOW THAT IS PERVERSE.
There needs to be an option with expose where if you hit the F9 or F10 keys the windows sizes and shapes remain the new sizes, this would allow two windows side-by-side... maybe I am missing the point of the whole thing.
sorry, rant coming... WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? Big Brother doesn't give a damn what you listen to. Wake up, pay your damn 99cents and get yourself some legal AACs.. IF you think "Big Brother" does care about what you listen to, you think way too much of yourself - nobody cares what you're doing to a gerbal in your mom's basement. I don't want bad karma here, but this "excuse" IS WORSE than the "we won't pay exhorbitant amounts for music which should be near free" - granted $17 is excessive for a CD which costs next to nothing to make... so stop making excuses and start being a stand-up honorable human being. Other "un-ethical" people doing un-ethical things, do NOT make it ok for you to steal (or borrow, or swap) from them.
Incidentally, I am a Mac switcher, and I have to say, iTunes is just the tip of the iceburg on what many people are missing...
HP with it's terrible support site still managed to answer this question recently... I can't seem to recall what I asked for help on to get the knowledge-base (yeah, right) to spit back a topic like that.. but they did have it, and recently.
So, linking heterosexuality with linux and windows with homosexuality MUST be the correct logic? Sheesh, they'll let anybody join/. anymore. Are l/\m3Rz gay and hax0rs straight too? What if some dude is watching straight pr0n on a windows machine? or another more _fuity_ machine? is he still gay? I mean this whole thread is nonsense. Mod down, for "DUMBASS".
We use ghost 2003 here at work. While we do have a dual format DVD burner (Sony 500LX?), a good method is to dual partition your machine, one for OS/software.. the other (larger) for media. Image the software partition to DVD(or CD) and backup the other side to a network store. This provides an instant restore point, while being fairly cost effective. ghost 2003 has built-in firewire/usb 2.0 support for both dvd and cd burning. Finally, if you go with CD burning, it can compress more than 700 MB onto a disc (I have had discs containing over 1GB of data on them). Also, the media is bootable. So a bit off topic, but none-the-less touches on the "backup" aspect.

Just my opinion.
Just in time to be obsolete!
so what you're saying is you are "Person X"?

you said "asshats" hahahahaha
- You're right, but it still seems like there's some kind of ethical dilema beyond that....

NT doesn't me "No Troubles?"
When was the last time you clicked on a banner? Really? Even on Slashdot (a site you more than likely WANT to support)?

CONTIKI? (it runs on EVERYTHING, I hear)
wow, I got that... you read slashdot (or macslash, wherever it's from) too much :-)

or $199 for 5, and I own a Mac, I can quite honestly say, we don't live in "the real world" - "what is real" anyway.. :-P
it just keeps getting better.. I mean worse! puns are fun, butt please go back to work. :-)

"I grew up learning querty (learned to touch type when I was 9 I believe)."
:-D
and they didn't teach you how to spell it?
QWERTY - it's on the keyboard if you've forgotten.
This is slashdot, of course I am going to split-hairs!
