    Programming a dynamic PHP/MySQL website is "stupid easy" as a friend of mine says. I am so tired of seeing these "all-in-one" books. If they made a PHP/MySQL for Dummys book - it'd be 4 pages long. Maybe after reading this book, the websites write themselves. The hardest part of designing these websites ends up being whether you can keep the customer from changing their mind for long enough to push the project out. Criticisms I have for alot of PHP/MySQL combo books are that they generally don't include these:

    - Good documentation on Objects
    - Security Concerns
    - php.ini explaination and configuration
    - Memory Concerns
    - Good examples of database normalization?

    Sorry, but I think that if you've got a good MySQL database book, and the digital format of the PHP manual (available in multiple formats from www.php.net) You have everything you need but the server. INCIDENTALLY: MySQL not "robust" enough? 4.1 is going to hit you like a freight train.

    By "enemies of the state" I mean those in opposition to a given government. I didn't say terrorists, although they would more than likely fall under this category. I'm saying we are putting ourselves at a very high risk by getting these things up in the air and becoming dependant on their services and not giving them proper defensive mechanisms.

    Doing a bit of math.
    300,000 is the total sq. miles or the result of
    pi*r^2 (since the area covered must be circular in nature)

    so, r^2 = approx 100,000

    r = approx 316 miles.

    THIS SEEMS LIKE A LARGE DISTANCE TO COVER.
    (I am already warming up from the flames to come on the previous statement already)
    Also - I don't like the idea of having these things floating over our heads to be blown up by enemies of the state at any moment. We will begin to rely on this wireless network and it is ultimately almost completely defenseless, plus no reentry to burn them up before they crash into the ground destroying a home or two. I realize I am being a bit pessimistic here, but I think this is just asking for trouble. Besides, how will they be powered?

  16. MPAA - More Punishment And Abuse on MPAA Countersues 321 Studios · · Score: 1

    The problem with this situation is not that MPAA is suing 321 Studios - we expect that from them. They should be suing them to shut them down, not to gain all their profits. This is yet another example that shows their "ethics." The MPAA have no problems with copying media - as long as they are the ones making the money off of it. As an unrelated observation on the subject, it's odd that some MPAA members also produce DVD burners (SONY comes to mind).

They seem to use almost all Open Source software, but you can get frontpage extensions installed (and subsequently uninstalled) for no extra charge.. not that you'd want to ;-) -- drawbacks are that you can't have huge online file archives, or serve "pr0n" - sorry if this was your plan. But great service none-the-less.
