Do you care to explain why? If you are contributing to the wikipedia project, what makes you less interested in the origins of the project if they are 5 years old than if they are 25 years old?
It's a pity that most 3G phones that are offered these days (at least in the UK) are restricting surfing to the service provider's homepage.
Sounds really lame, and it definitely is. So even if I've got a great 3G phone with browsing capabilities, I can't access the Google Local Mobile page because my service provider limits my usage to its own pay-services.
I hope to see a change in this area. Monopoly is never good, and imagine only being able to surf on one site where your service provider sets the rules.
The article highlights that Google developers are allowed to spend 20% of their time on what daltonlp calls "lab projects, personal projects, forever-in-beta projects, whatever".
Google constantly produces revolutionary innovations that noone can foretell. (How many of you thought you would have 1gb of email space for free?)
Conclusion is, I don't quite buy daltonlp's arguments for why it would be impossible that one of these lab projects is to develop browser based os/applications.
In this day and age, everyone does business this way.
Not entirely true. I know many local companies and larger corporations that I think do a far better job to maintain common sense and moral while staying in business.
It's already common practice for libraries to charge for renting DVDs, ordering books etc. so I wouldn't say it comes as a surprise that they charge for these pictures in high-res.
If people want to watch BBC's biased coverage, GOOD! Let them. If there's a demand for something else, another station will fill it.
I'm not speaking for or against goverment regulated media. But something that is not always mentioned in this debate is that a self-regulated media merket seems to produce even more biased reporting than the government regulated ones.
This seems to defeat the whole argument about freedom of speech - let the media market regulate itself.
n.b: please don't mod this as a troll, i just wanted to raise this issue in the discussion.
There will be no 'geek-students' to help the teacher, after the Company man leaves.
I dont think you should underestimate children in any part of the world.
Give computers to a group of school kids in Dallas, Tokyo, Africa or anywhere and one or two curious of them will understand the in and outs of them in notime.
In light of these findings it's funny to see that the nation US, who refuses to agree to the Kyoto treaty (basically because of greed) is the same nation that feels that "western values" should be imposed on other countries.
Us being worlds greatest pollutor, it would be interesting to see how the rest of the world would look like if it would conform to this culture.
..er hang on a minute, maybe it wouldn't be so funny!

Those in America and the UK, and other developed countries, are relatively better educated.
Than what countries? Let me remind you that India has got one of the best IT University degrees in the world. Was this really an educated comment?
As such, their occupational mobility is higher.
How is the educational level linked to the occupational mobility?
Not to insult *your* intelligence, but modern Windows OSes *do* work.
Thanks for *your* input. *Congratulations* to *not* haven been modded *down*.
So how would you pinpoint a position on the record if you don't supply the time axis information? Clearly time is also an axis.
Yes but the record is spinning, thus providing you the third axis:
Axis 1: Horizontal Groove
Axis 2: Vertical Groove
Axis 3: Time
I'm tempted to say: "Nothing new move along"; but I appreciate that it's quite different when applied to digital media.
Although storing information in 3D is nothing new, that's how you get music in stereo from a vinyl record.
Programmers are generally broad-picture thinkers who solve largely complicated problems that regular folks can't possibly wrap their heads around.
Please...
I know it's Slashdot I'm reading, but I didn't know readers had that high thoughts about themselves.
Looks like they've even taken over your username, FooGoo! ;)

[...] her site will not lead away internetters [...]
The term already agreed upon is internauts. Especially seeing that this is a french story and the term originates from france.
Let's not over dramatise this shall we? What sort of withdrawal syptoms would you have experienced?
"[...] the man who has single-handedly revolutionised the use of Unix on the x86 platform"
Oh, I thought there were several people involved in Linux? Didn't know Linus created it "single-handedly".
Thanks for pointing that out to me, ZDNet!

Don't forget!! For this to work, you first need to place a special sticker on the Ipod Shuffle!

Thanks New York Public Library for putting these 275,000 pictures online!
As a re-opening present for this nice gesture, we will... slashdot you!

Congratulations on getting a post that included this sentence to be modded "Informative"
" The BBC is (in Britain at least) a public sector organisation"
Was this a typo, or is there a part of BBC outside of Britain that is regulated differently?

not having RTFA, I think that what they are trying to patent is something like:
;-)
Thanks for your (qualified?) guess on what the article reads.
But instead of accepting your guess what the patent is, I think I'll go ahead and RTFA.

Can someone summarize what this story is about?
;-)
Are you challenging someone to karma whore for you? I'm sure 15,000 words isn't enough to stop some whores though
