    FYI, you're wrong about the worst case... it's been demonstrated that one can get an HP printer to send a copy of everything printed to a remote printer or other IP... Do you really want your TPS reports stolen?

    Umm, are you not aware that someone could DOS your site by spoofing traffic from AOL, SBC, Comcast, ...

    Then, you block those networks, and no one can get to your site.

    Gets even worse... I might even be able to block you from reaching the root DNS servers!

    If you install lilo or grub into the boot sector of the partition linux which is installed, then you can point the NT loader at that partition without having to copy anything.

    Maybe I could dd the first sector of hda to hdc, which would clone the reference MBR. But I'm not sure that works if the disk geometries are different.

    Won't work for lilo, but IIRC that should work for grub.

    Mini-ITX systems are small, and if you get one with a VIA CPU, can need less than 30W, including the hard drive.

    The systems usually sell with case, mb, and CPU.
    They start at about $200.

    Depending on the case, you can use a 2.5" or 3.5" HD, and usually a slim CD or DVD.

    Mini-ITX.com has LOTS of info.

    If you get a VIA, make sure its a recent one (C3?) as the older ones aren't fully 686 compatible so some software won't run on them.

    FWIW, they have Squid caches in front of the web farm, so there are cached static copies of busy pages.

    Don't forget that ballistic armor (a bulletproof vest) doesn't help against stabbing or cutting weapons...
    (Note: I'm not an expert. I'm sure somebody is trying to make a dual-purpose vest, if they haven't already. I just know that the standard ones are ballistic only.)

    You can get kevlar with a thin steel or titanium "trauma plate" which will stop most knife/stabbing attacks.

    The French developed combat armor capable of stopping any standard military round below .50BMG.

    (Kevlar + big metal plate on front and back of torso)

    Unfortunately, it weighs 75lbs.

    IIRC, the Seattle case involved massive credit-card theft/sales.

    FWIW, it's not hard to make PDFs from PHP, etc. (for the labels)

    If you have a PostScript 3 printer, you can send them directly to the printer without a driver.

    finite bandwidth between processors makes it impossible to sustain anywhere near peak performance for most real-world applications.

    Linpack is what is usually used to measure sustained performance on HPC systems.

    are very small (notebook HD only, no CD or other drive bays).
    IIRC, they're under $400 with motherboard, CPU, case, and PS.

    No need to be so rude.

    Get a $40 Trident or S3 or whatever they make nowadays.
    Or get an old PCI card if you have a PCI slot free.

    Also, I've seen lots of NVidia cards with dead fans that still work fine, at least for 2-D.
    Get a GeForce4MX or something, and unplug the fan.

    I like to use an old USR ISA modem with CallerID to see who's calling.

    I've had bad experiences with PCI (win)modems.

    However, my new mb has no ISA slots, so I am now going to have to use an external modem.
