  1. Ambiguity on TapWave's Zodiac Handheld Analyzed · · Score: 1

Anyone else notice the ambiguity in the quotations? "After using the Zodiac for a bit, you get the impression that it's designed not as a handheld gaming system with some built-in PDA functionality but, rather, as a PDA that also happens to play games pretty well." While being impressed with fan support at sites like Zodiac Gamer, the reviewer suggests: "So far, TapWave has presented a fairly impressive package with the Zodiac, though its current lineup of top-tier games is a little too short to catch the average gamer's attention." The review concludes: "The system is also a little pricey for the gamer on a budget... [but] it's a fairly open platform due to its Palm OS support, so the amateur development community will likely keep the Zodiac stocked with amusement potential regardless of what the system's commercial developers turn out."

  3. Simply a poorly done review on There Inc - Propagating the Bad of Society? · · Score: 1

This is a very weak article, and only reinforces the image of geeks as judgmental know-it-alls. Some people just like to walk around and chat with different people. I like Flight Sim, but maybe he likes BF1942. Not only is his 'review' grossly biased, but it is also inaccurate. For instance, he makes the remark that the monthly plan for There has an activation fee, and then rhetorically asks how many other games have an activation fee. He answers 'NONE!'... I answer 'MOST!', what does he consider the $45 at Best Buy- a donation?

Humm... parent is a very good post.

To add a short thought to this idea, I think the 'politic'/'civics' aspect is something that should be explored more in online games. I am currently playing a MUD right now that puts a heavy focus on play-run cities, goverments, guilds, etc., and it is a more rewarding experience than I have ever had in an online game.

  8. My 1 Cent on ALA 3 Goes Online · · Score: 2, Interesting

Faint Text: Looks fine to me on three different monitors. Perhaps you should adjust your contrast?

Fixed Width: It is a trade off. Yes, text could flow on forever until it fills the user's window width (which is very bad), or the text can be set to a reasonable fixed width, preventing users from resizing the text as desired (bad but less bad) but saving a lot of work for users that don't mind the choosen fixed width.

Final thought: (and this is not a plug in anyway because I am sure most of /. would find my website rather trivial) Something of a middle ground can be found by using EMs to set the width of the text area as I have done with my personal site. By doing this the text column is resized along with the text size. Though the text size has to shrink to also shrink the column (though this too could be avoided with JS), it seems to be a good 85% of the time rule.

  9. I agree, there are too many similar MMORPGs on The MMORPGs Of 2003 - Disappointing? · · Score: 1

I strongly agree that there will soon - or may already - be far more Sci-Fi / Fantasy style MMORPG games than the market can bear. I was one of the many that was in UO on 'day 1'. I have also played AC, EQ, DAoC and EVE, though I currently don't subscribe to any MMORPGs. Lately I've been MUDing, but even that is largely because it's free and portable (very easy to find a telnet client when you're out and about).

Not because I just wanted to follow the crowd, but because I didn't want to feel isolated in a huge empty world. Achaea is very enjoyable and places a huge emphasis on player-player interaction. Any claims that Achaea sucks because you have to pay are either very outdated or very misinformed. (it is free)

Oh, and also, first you say user profiles, than you ask about security policies? Which are you interested in? In a Windows context, user profiles are things like roaming desktops, IE Favorites, My Documents, etc, while security policies refer to what users/groups can use what network resources and change what settings.

Are your computers joined to a Win2K/2K3 domain, and is Active Directory in place? If so, you should research Group Polices, which can be applied on a per user or per computer (or per group of computers/users, or per domain) basis. If you don't have a domain controller, you can use the local security policy for each machine and that would apply to any user of that machine.
