I did a spreadsheet calculation based upon my yearly SS contribution amounts from the numbers the SSA sends out to everyone each year. If the money I and my employers had been "contributing" to Social Security on my behalf all of my life had been earning 5% per year, I would now have about $500,000 as a result. Now that I'm retired however, the government only gives me back $1,900 a month.

I was rather impressed when I did jury duty service in Los Angeles and noticed that in the main jurors waiting room there were several Micro-ATX sized computers with Internet access for rent by the hour. The computers were locked down so tight (the Mozilla web browser and a card game were the only apps installed) that I couldn't even tell what OS they were running until I did a POR reset so I could watch it reboot. They were running one of the major Linux distributions, but at the moment I can't recall which it was (Suse I think).

  21. Yes it does... on Phoenix Mars Polar Lander Website Launched · · Score: 2, Interesting

Yes it does bear a striking resemblence to the 1998 Mars Polar Lander mission. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if the Scout isn't just a rebuild of it - hopefully with the landing gear problem fixed. ;-)

I always thought that not reusing the design and development work that went into the 1998 Mars Polar Lander is an example of NASA waste. Just because the landing gear failed to function properly is no reason to discard all the design and development time and effort that people (including myself - I spent about a year writing the firmware for the MET metrological subsystem for the 1998 mission) put into the rest of the project. Design and development is the major cost of spacecraft, and any reasonable person would simple correct the landing gear problem and try again rather than trashing the entire design and starting over from scratch.
