After all, I could use the tools included in Slackware (gcc, vim, the source packages, etc) to make a new distro, but that wouldn't make it Slackware.

Nope...that would make it Red Hat :P.

(In case some of you don't know/remember, RH started out as a derivative of Slackware).

Nonsense. It is an effort to impose a proprietary embrace-and-extended standard on a community that is doing just fine with consensual standards where they make sense, and a wide open, free and fair marktetplace that encourages choice everywhere else.

If you're referring to the packaging system (which will most likely be rpm), I hope you realize that rpm *is* released under an open license -- the GPL.

From reading the Google cache of the article, it appears that the "professionals" at Qwest have been (& still are) jerking them around. I mean, seeing as how the community is willing to pay a *premium* for the DSL equipment & connection, why would it have been so difficult for the TELCO to set it up themselves?

I hope more communities start doing this & similar services, that should send a message to the phone monopolies.

  7. Re:Microsoft Linux? no, but maybe a BSD on Where UnitedLinux Got It Wrong · · Score: 2

Wouldn't a more likely scenario be Microsoft using a BSD, along with other packages with either a BSD or BSD-type license (since they wouldn't have to release any source)? Along with possibly a linux-compatibility layer to run Linux binaries, that would actually be an interesting idea for them (they already use some open-source code: for example their TCP/IP stack & zlib).

OK, we're going to trust an anti-virus vendor about a virus/trojan that would be difficult (if not impossible) to spread in the wild? I haven't read *anything* about how this would attack a Linux system (does it cause a buffer overflow? Does it edit a system config file? Do you need to somehow accidentally execute an email attachment?).

I think that this was cooked up in Symantec's labs in order to scare people & possibly serve as an ad for their software, especially if they have a "solution" that runs on Linux.

    • XFree86 - allows me to see pretty pictures on the localhost or remotely, also not under the GPL
    • vi - multi-purpose text editor, *not* under the GPL
    • XEmacs - because RMS claims it's not GPL, & it was forked from GNU Emacs, & JWZ is cool
I could go on & on, even naming some closed-source & commercial (gasp!) software that I need & use to get my job done. My point? When you call a distribution "Linux", most people know you are referring to the complete collection of kernel, software & utilities.
